Experiences of the Kyleena coil compared with Mirena for contraception

Could anyone share their experience of the Kyleena contraceptive coil? I’m considering it instead of the mirena for a few reasons but I’m very undecided and nervous about the coil in general.

  • smaller coil would be less painful to insert and remove
  • slightly less hormones than mirena but still effective as a contraceptive, might mean I experience less of the negative hormonal effects.
  • I don’t need it as part of HRT yet, I’m 37 but don’t have peri symptoms. I understand the Kyleena isn’t suitable for HRT as it doesn’t have enough hormones? I may have that wrong

I’d also love to hear experience of weightlifting with a coil fitted and having sex with one (have read so many negative things about painful sex and your partner feeling the strings, it sounds so unpleasant!)
thank you

I had the Kyleena, but experienced severe cramping for weeks as well as a lot of bleeding. It did settle... though I would get twinges daily - not exactly painful but discomfort, my gynaecologist said was expected.
I didn't get on with it & had it removed. I went privately so just made the decision and that was that... but I have heard it can be a struggle to get NHS drs to remove coils just because you decide it's not working for you.

Insertion and removal were ok for me - not pleasant but not awful either.

Kyleena and Mirena have synthetic progesterone not bioidentical progesterone which you would take for HRT, so there's no 'protection' of the womb from that.

Couldn't tell you about whether my husband noticed... but really - it's not about him!

I had one about a decade ago when I was both married and lifting heavy weights. I can honestly say it didn’t impact either of those things. My husband never mentioned feeling it.
I wouldn’t go straight from the clinic to deadlifting your body weight - maybe give it a bit of time to settle but I’ve had 3 coils now and found they are fine within a week (not medical advice - do speak to the dr or nurse who fits it)

I have considered going private for that reason. I guess the only way to find out is to try and hope for the best, it’s a shame you had to go through pain and discomfort for a while and then have it removed. The nurse did say to me you must give it time to settle but it’s very difficult getting on with life during that time if you have severe cramps!

Sounds like it was a positive experience for you. It’s wild how women’s experiences differ so much!

I’m on my second one at 48. Love it. Completely stopped my periods after ten days of bleeding after the first one was put in. Wanted the lower dose hormones as have had issues with hormonal contraception in the past. Wasn’t amazing having it in or out but bearable and I have had c-sections rather than vaginal births. Husband doesn’t notice it. Wish I’d had them decades ago!
