Ovarian cyst found on internal ultrasound

I've just had a transvaginal ultrasound. The sonographer found a large cyst on my right ovary. She's referred me back to my GP with the advice of being seen by gynae. As soon as she started scanning the right side it was uncomfortable and since I've had it done it's aching.

im slightly panicked as she said it was large but she's seen larger and it looks complex. Trying not to google but I'm really scared.

Why were you having the scan in the first place? Pain? Hopefully you will be put on a fast track to be investigated further. They will likely do a blood test to look for cancer markers. I was recently hospitalised for a twisted ovarian cyst - two transvaginal scans, a CT, blood tests and now an MRI. My blood tests were negative and they don’t think it’s cancer but I still was released on a two week referral but had to really push to get my appointment moved up as I was initially booked to see the specialist ten weeks later! You must advocate for speedy action. Best wishes for you.

there is every chance it could be absolutely nothing @Thomastuchel so try not to worry and stay off google or you will drive yourself crazy!

I had one (I had a scan because it hurt so much) and it turned out it was a rogue ovulation post-menopause, it eventually subsided and that turned out to be the issue, I had ovulated without an egg actually being released many times, and it had made the area very sore.

Most important thing is that you have had it checked and can now get it dealt with, whatever it is...the waiting is scary but the likelihood of it actually being something scary is very low.

I had the scan because I've been having intermittent spotting despite being on Desogestrel and my periods stopping. I've had some pain in that area too on and off. A couple of months ago i had pelvic pain and felt quite ill but that was coupled with a high FIT test and calprotectin, blood in stool and passing mucus. I've had a colonoscopy since but at the time I kept saying the pain felt like it was gynae.

The sonographer said today the cyst is large and complex and she was referring back to my GP to refer to Gynae.

Op I’ve had cysts on both ovaries my entire reproductive like. “Complex” could mean a Dermoid cyst, I had a 10cm one which had to be removed but they are usually benign.

Try not to worry and get a gynae appointment as soon as you can.

I’ve had lots of cysts on my ovaries due to endometriosis. I’ve had two operations and both went fine although I had to have my tube taken on the last one. The last since was about 12cm
