All month ive had a horrific cold....two weeks off work struggling to care for my toddlers and a month on i am still waking my self up at night with a cough and congestion, and now I've also developed thrush. I work part time and 2 year old twins and I'm EXHAUSTED. any ideas on how to recover and get a proper night's sleep?!

Get yourself some Fluconazole (generic name, don't pay Caneston prices!). Do you have mouth thrush (dry mouth?) as well or just the usual? If yes - see a doctor and they can give you a prescription for 7-14 days which will clear both up. With the cold - get as much water in you as possible and as much nutritious food to help your body recover. Night Nurse too - I know it's a worry but if your twins are sleeping through and you time it right you could at least get four hours uninterrupted sleep to start with.

Good old fashioned chicken soup - get some chicken bone broth, or simmer a chicken carcass overnight, drain it (keeping the liquid, not the bones - I once poured the liquid away in a cold-induced stupor) then either make a trad chicken soup with barley, leeks, carrots, herbs, shredded kale etc or a chicken noodle soup with chilli, garlic, ginger, lemon, spring onions and shredded chicken.

Hot toddies to bring down infection: slice a lemon and a peeled cube of ginger, pour on a pint of boiling water, add a few cloves, a flat dessert spoon of turmeric powder and a heaped dessertspoon of honey, and stir. Let it steep for about 5-10 mins. Stir it again before you pour, as the turmeric settles. Turmeric is a bit bitter and gritty but very good for calming inflammation. the other ingredients are soothing.

Rest as much as possible. Apart from making soup and toddlies - everything else should be 2-minute dinners - filled pasta and pesto, beans on toast, banana custard - zero effort stuff. Let DC watch TV while you rest.
