WTF is my period doing with it's life?

(I fully intend to make a GP appointment but NHS Wales being what it is, it will be at least 3 weeks, possibly longer, before I can see one in person by which time I'm hoping this will have self resolved anyway!)

I'm 45 and since about 13 have had pretty much regular periods. Every 25-28 days almost without fail, lasting 4-5 days. Never late apart from when PG, occasionally early (21 days). They tend to be heavy though, and for the last few years I've used tranexamic acid for the first 2/3 days to ease them a bit which works well. I'm defining heavy as "super plus tampons last less than 2 hours and need to get up in the night to change pads". Fortunately they've never been painful beyond what a couple of nurofen deals with!

When my periods first started at 12, I had about a year of them being irregular and stop/starting but never late - always early and horribly heavy. But they settled down and have been as described above ever since.

Until the last 2 months.

Last month it took 8 days for bleeding to stop and then I had a bit of spotting 3 days later.

This month it took 9 days for bleeding to stop, and 10 days later it started up again 😣 spotting at first but now turned into typical flow.

Other than that no symptoms whatsoever. But it's like my periods have gone back to how they were the first year I had them!

I know nobody can offer actual medical advice and that seeing a GP is advisable for any unusual bleeding but is my suspicion that this is perimenopause related likely to be correct, anyone?

It’s good to get it checked out, they gave me a scan when I had a change in bleeding pattern in my early 50s (all ok just peri…)

am now on the coil which has made the bleeds very minimal. A friend of mine had an ablation.

hope you get looked after well by your GP

Sounds like it. Perimenopause bleeding can be chaotic as the lining grows and builds up with oestrogen but isnt stabilised by progesterone. Ovulation becomes inconsistent as the ovaries age: when ovulation doesnt happen, there is no corpus luteum formed and therefore progesterone is not produced. Progesterone is the hormone that keeps the uterine lining stable. So low progesterone means the lining keeps trying to shed (bleeding again after only 10 days). Im going through all this myself since August, so Ive only just learned about it.

GP often suggests Mirena coil as it covers a lot of problems all at once. It delivers local progesterone to the uterus and is very effective at keeping the lining thin and reduces bleeding, but may not suit everyone.

Please think about taking iron to rebuild your stores whilst you wait to see GP. Im sure they will be able to help you.

It sounds a lot like peri menopausal bleeding. GP may give you tranexamic acid tablets or offer the Mirena but you could also do with a referral to a gynaecologist. In my case I ended up having ablation surgery as tablets were ineffective against that amount of daily bleeding.

Am bleeding every 2 weeks here. I just assumed peri. Should I tell doc?

2chocolateoranges · 19/09/2026 09:56

I went to the doctors about mine too, they were becoming more frequent, more painful and so much more heavier. I was only lasting an hour before having to get changed. Dr explained that the closer you get to the menopause the more erratic your periods can become,

im now on the pill. What a difference it makes. Life is normal now,

Sounds like peri. Mine got to the point I got a gynae referral, and they found a small fibroid, but everything else was fine. Also, I got iron tablets because of all the bleeding- they took bloods to check.

Thanks all Flowers

Will get on to the GP on Monday morning then! But assuming it's just all part of the glorious aging process 😣

PS I am already taking daily iron supplements, ferrous bisglycinate, so should be ok on that score!
