Experience with mirena coil for suspected endometriosis

I’ve had heavy painful periods basically since I started age 11. I’m now 36.
Unexplained infertility which resulted in one child in 11 years ttc and one round of failed IVF.
Ended up attending A&E last month due to vomiting with pain after taking co codamol, ibuprofen and buscopan. Discharged after another 30mg of codeine brought my pain to a more manageable level and said it was ‘just a bad period’, no bloods or scan taken.

i went back to my GP who has advised after a ultrasound scan if it’s ok to have a mirena coil inserted.

Anyone have any experiences of this?

I’ve heard stories where they make periods worse and if you struggle with them they are reluctant to take them out (the GP has assured me they would take it out if I requested).

I didn’t get on with oral contraceptives, they made me very anxious and suicidal so I’m worried about that.

An internal ultrasound scan may not reveal anything. Endometriosis deposits are very small and are not readily detected via ultrasound. The usual way engines diagnosed is via laparoscopy which is a keyhole surgery op.

It seems to me they only want to treat the symptoms and not the cause. Mirena is cheap but it’s not going to address any endo if it is present and if your periods are very heavy it could well fall out. Moreover it’s just treating the symptoms rather than the cause. You need to know why this is happening.

have you never been seemingly referred to a gynaecologist by your GP?. You should be referred to such a person.

As a nurse I’ve research into this and thats why I have refused coils in the past.
I also wanted another child. Gynae when were were going through infertility and IVF seem uninterested.

i discussed this with GP when I said USS doesn’t show endo. Apparently the coil is a hoop I have to jump through, if this doesn’t work then it’s a gynae referral. My GP with a gynae interest said that’s the pathway now.
if i was a bloke with this amount of pain this wouldn’t be happening.

The ultrasound is basically showing it’s safe for a coil….
