Nexplanon Contraception implant making my mental health unbearable

I have booked to have my implant taken out, I have another 2 weeks of this unfortunately Before I have it removed, but I only had it inserted 3 weeks ago but my god it is making me crazy!

I had very positive results with the implant prior to having my children had had it in for 9 years with no issues, but this time round is drowning. My anxiety is heightened, panic attacks have come back daily, I am finding it hard to socialise as it’s making me really irritable and angry, it’s causing me to have sleep issues, the sensations and feeling I am getting from this implant are horrendous, it’s making me feel like I am absolutely crazy and almost to the point I feel like I can’t cope living like this.

Just wanted to see if there is anyone else that has been through this from contraception before, especially the implant, and if they had it removed how long after did it take to go back to normal. I am really suffering. I hate it so much to the point I feel like ripping it out of my arm myself!

I had something very similar the one and only time I had the injection many years ago (which I couldn't have taken out, so hang onto that silver lining!) I felt like I was on an emotional rollercoaster. Never again! I sympathise. Some of us just won't get on with certain contraception.

For what it's worth I eventually ended up swapping to the copper coil which I've found excellent (effective and non-hormonal). My periods got heavier, especially when first put in, but I'm fortunate that mine have always been unproblematic so this was no big deal for me. I preferred not having any form of hormone interference (I'd previously been on the pill which was fine but still not 'me') and would choose it every time if I could.

@HadALittleBasket did you feel like someone or something was taking over your body and you couldn’t control it? That’s the best way I can describe it. I honestly feel like I could end up doing something that isn’t controlled by myself but this implant in my arm!!

The copper coil I have been told about before! I think that probably is my only option, unless my husband gets the snip but he is still only 29 and I’m 32 so I’m not sure if we want to make that drastic change just yet just incase we do decide to have another baby later down the line. The only thing that worries me with the copper coil is that you have a wire hanging down and that it could get caught, or you could catch it somehow, feel it etc.

thank you for your response though, I just can’t believe how much this tiny rod is affecting me and the same for other with any contraception. I did try the pill but I kept forgetting to take it x

I did feel like someone else was in the driving seat of my emotions and life (though maybe not quite as extreme as you're describing).

I honestly never feel those coil wires and have never had an issue with catching them or anything (and I use tampons and mooncups).

Good luck! Try to have a very quiet and dull couple of weeks at home until you're free!

@HadALittleBasket thank god I’ve managed to get myself booked in for removal this afternoon! They had a cancellation, thought I would try my luck. So happy. It’s absolutely awful. Unfortunately I work full time and have 2 young children with very little support so a quiet couple of weeks is impossible, but now I am having it out today, I am hoping I go back to normal just as quick as how quickly it’s made me go insane!
that’s reassuring about the coil, I am a little screamish with things that aren’t supposed to be in our bodies and the though of it just freaks me out a little

I have the same issue with hormonal contraception - never had the implant or injection but the pill and Mirena both had a terrible effect on my mood! It tends to be other people around me who suffer as I get extremely irritable.
I also use the copper coil now, and it's great for me. Periods are slightly longer (last 5 days instead of 3 so not too bad) and I don't notice the strings (you can get them trimmed if it bothers you).
