Polyp on womb

I’ve had irregular bleeding/periods lasting longer the last 9 months. Saw a gynaecologist who examined my cervix, said all was ok but let’s do an internal scan just to be safe. He was 99% sure it was just hormonal. Had the scan today, did the external first, Radiographer said all was fine, doubt we will find anything on the internal.. she then went very quiet & said she can see some of the womb lining is thicker & she thinks it’s a polyp. She was quite solemn when she told me. I didn’t know what to say.. I asked if they were cancerous.. she said they can be. I’ve gone home not knowing what to think. My follow up withe the consultant isn’t for 2 weeks. I’m 36. Has anyone else had this?

Yes, I had this.

Short version: I was given a D&C to remove several polyps. Would have been 62 at the time.

Later had more bleeding and had one examination which seemed to show thickened lining - but nothing sinister - and later a hysteroscopy where I was told that the consultant reckoned he was looking at lining 'normal for a 64 yr old woman'. However, he inserted a Mirena coil to give me localised progesterone to protect the womb - I'm on HRT to prevent osteoporosis. I'm now 66.

Forgot to add that I had a biopsy each time.

Should also add that my scans/inspections etc were all done by gynaes, not a radiographer. (Point I'm making is that a gynae would have more expertise.)

@WearyAuldWummanThank you. I can’t help but google & meant to be starting a new job now have this hanging on top of me. I just wish I could get a biopsy done asap & then get the results & know what I’m dealing with.

I remember what it was like...

When I was told that I had thickening of the womb lining, the first verdict was that there was nothing sinister and it was thickening without atypia. Second time round it was the most senior consultant and he was the one that said it was the normal uterus of a 64 yr old.

He did recommend the Mirena, from the point of view of protecting the womb. (I have the risk factors of being overweight and never having given birth. Plus it turned out I'd been on the wrong HRT for my age!)

Had never had a coil in my life, but I agreed. I've been fine.

Oh...I'll add that when I was 40 I was given a laparoscopy because I'd tried and failed to get pregnant. (I reckon I just left it too late.)

The gynae that time found a small fibroid. 20 yrs later, there was no sign of the fibroid, so it must be that they can come and go?

From my conversation with the consultant, they remove polyps in the uterus when they see them, just to prevent problems. Apparently those a bit further down aren't a problem except they can bleed a bit. (I've also had some removed there.)

While I remember, I was first told about a polyp on my cervix when I was in my 40s. It was told that that was nothing to worry about - according to the consultant those don't turn nasty, but if they're removing polyps elsewhere they take them out at the same time to stop the bleeding.

Thank you for all that. I just hate the waiting part but I guess that’s what I’ll have to do. I think the fact she geared me up she was likely to find nothing then obviously has wasn’t great. Also she said the lining of the womb is thicker & she thinks it could be a polyp, but obviously she isn’t sure.. who knows what else it could be & that’s the worry.
