Copper coil periods

Hi,

I have had the copper coil for over a year and for the first few days of my period it’s so heavy that it leaks through pads onto my pants. I’m sure the dr said that will ease off after 6 months but it hasn’t. Also even though the copper coil is non hormonal I have awful pms before and during my period, tbh I only feel normal about 1-2 weeks a month. Has any one else experienced similar? I’m on the verge of getting it removed.

Yes I had the very heavy periods and leaking. I found it embarrassing at 33 to be staining my clothes and bedding like I had just got my first ever period. I would leak through a tampon, pad and the side of period pants without warning. My period was also two weeks long, even after 6 months and I ended up with low iron. I got it removed in the end which was a shame but it was really inconvenient and the cramping also didn’t get much better

I didn’t have the PMS and migraines though. I would maybe get your iron checked if you haven’t already as I think headaches are a symptom

oh I’m so glad you replied I thought it was just me! Mine is about 10 days long🥴 I’m 30 and have never struggled with my period until getting this coil

Yes I definately think I’m low on iron. I constantly get dizzy when bending down and standing up

I was the same, it had never been particularly heavy or painful and I thought it would all settle down. During my research before getting the coil I saw a collection of scan images and it seems as though the standard coil is actually wider than the average uterus, so that might explain why things don’t settle down for some people, if they have a slighter smaller than average uterus.

I would definitely speak to your GP about your iron deficiency symptoms, healthy levels are 50+ even though the NHS only classes deficiency as lower than about 10. I hope the bleeding eases up, but if you do decide to have the coil out it’s a quicker and easier process than getting it put it in. I found it all a bit frustrating because I thought after a few months I would be able to just forget about it for up to 10 years!

My periods were quite heavy before getting the copper coil but obscenely heavy after! The pain as well for the first couple of days of each bleed was completely debilitating, I remember just having to curl up in the bath all evening every month.

I battled on with it for 2 years as I didn't want to have hormonal birth control but things didn't improve. I reluctantly switched to the Mirena coil and it was a huge improvement! Some people find their periods stop, mine didn't but they were slightly lighter.

I had mine removed to have DD and just had a new Mirena fitted 2 weeks ago. I was telling the Dr who fitted it how awful the copper coil was and she was very surprised I'd lasted 2 years. She said she lasted 2 months with hers! She said she can't explicitly scare people off it but she tries to dissuade them. I wish I had been scared off before having mine fitted!
