Sudden appearance of large breast lump

Had a routine breast exam in April, nothing sinister just dense breasts. Referred for mammogram as I am now 50 that appointment is on Monday.

A few days ago I found a large lump in my right breast. I thought it was a tissue stuck in my bra. It’s big and very obvious even when you lightly rub the skin.

What could this be?
It’s just above my nipple.

Great news you have a mammogram booked so don't have to wait too long. Could well be a cyst , try not to panic which is easier said than done.

Even though you have a mammogram booked I would see the GP for a breast clinic referral. Just going to the screening mammogram might be slower because they aren't geared up for it.
At the breast clinic they have doctors, radiologists and can interpret on the spot and do biopsies if needed.

It could be anything from the completely benign to the sinister. It was actually the first sign of my lymphoma in my DM, but I know this is extreme and it’s much much more likely to be a cyst or something.

the good news is that you have a mammogram booked quickly, so you can either get your mind put at rest or you can take action in the unlikely event it’s needed.

hope all goes well and you’re reassured soon!

If it's appeared quite suddenly it's probably a cyst or a cluster of them. I've had them several times. Apparently more common around the menopause. I've had the larger ones drained at the same time as the mammogram appointment so all dealt with quickly and easily. Those were referrals though not routine appointments so it might be different.

A screening mammogram is not usually done on a hospital site and the results are sent off and take a few weeks. I'm sure this is likely nothing but it needs to be seen at a breast clinic not a screening appointment.

Thanks for the replies, the mammogram is in a hospital breast clinic. They do triple assessment if necessary, ultrasound scan and biopsy. I had a cyst in the same spot 3 years ago but it was very small, like a pea. Had the assessment done then and required no further treatment. This is like a ping pong ball, not fully round but the bit I can feel is that size. I have small breasts and the tissue is dense and fibrous underneath.
