GP referred me after unexplained breast bruise, should I be worried?

I noticed a large purplish bruise on my breast a couple of days ago. Unexplained. No lumps or anything strange. I saw my GP today and the purple shade is now green and yellow so like a normal bruise. She examined me and seemed unconcerned. Said to come back in 4 weeks to have a check-up.

This afternoon she has called me back to say she’d rather be on the safe side and refer me to the hospital on the week pathway breast cancer because of a family history (mother had bc at age 59, thankfully survived). She sounded quite breezy and said most likely nothing but better safe then sorry.

I’m slightly freaking out here. Has anyone had this? She said they’ll most likely do an ultrasound or mammogram which I suppose is a good thing. I’m going on holiday next week and am going to be worrying now 😔

Your GP is doing her job. No one on here can tell you what the tests might or might not show. Go and have the tests and deal with the results when you get them.

I think it’s great that your GP is showing so much care and working on the side of caution. Many people push for months for referrals.

It’s pretty standard now to put people on the 2-week pathway for anything unusual. I was put on it when I reported that my throat didn’t feel right and my voice had changed a bit.

It’s just precautionary rather than that the doctor thinks there’s something seriously wrong. And it makes sense, really, to check out symptoms earlier rather than later on.

Thank you. I was just a bit shocked because at the appointment she didn’t think it’s was worrying at all and neither did I. I came home feeling pleased that I’d raised it and got reassurance before going on holiday. Now I presume I won’t get clarity on this for ages. I really think it’s nothing just a peculiar thing. A bruise that acts like a normal bruise in that it goes through the usual colours then fades away doesn’t seem to be a sign of cancer at all. So I feel she’s being overly cautious. Anyway I will try to frame it as me being fortunate to have a thorough check which is never a bad thing.

Update in case anyone stumbles on this when googling similar symptoms. I was very lucky that I got a cancellation today (before my holiday!) and went the one-stop clinic. Incredible service. Examination, mammogram, ultrasound all in one go and told nothing sinister, just a resolving bruise from some sort of knock (I have no memory of this but hey ho it doesn’t really matter now). I was there for just under 2 hours and am able to get on with my life and not worry all summer. Thank you NHS!!
