Polyp on cervix

Rubyroo2011 · 25/05/2026 16:21

Im 52 & post menopausal, last year in a routine smear a polyp was found on my cervix. This year i was offered a hysterectomy in which I declined, I thought it was a bit harsh just to have it done. My consultant tried to remove polyp but said it was in a awkward position but when my doctor examined me she could feel it was there. Now i have to go back to hospital in September to see about getting removed. I have no symptoms

The issue with polyps is that they can, sometimes, become cancerous. So the clinicians are erring on the side of caution. My dad had two in his colon and because they were flat to the wall of the colon he had a bit of his colon completely removed to prevent future cancer. Otherwise they would have tried to remove them during a colonoscopy, but couldn't because they were flat. It's your choice of course, but prevention is better than cure and that is what they are gearing towards.

Sounds very similar to my dad's situation, albeit in a different area of the body - well to be fair, he doesn't have a cervix! Hope that the appointment goes well and that you are given all of the information that you need to make the right decision for you.

How do you discover if you have polyps if you have no symptoms?

As @Rubyroo2011 said, for her it was during a smear. For her situation and that area of her body. My dad had rectal bleeding and thought it was piles for a long time.

I've had a few removed. Found either during routine smears or when having colposcopy.
Had them removed during colposcopy and when hang a hysteroscopy.

Not very nice, but bearable.

I had one on my cervix! Was noticed during IVF stims but by the time of egg retrieval it had disappeared. I had light bleeding first trimester and it was back and big! 2-3cm. As I was pregnant they couldn’t remove it. Around about 7/8 months pregnant, it FELL OUT MY PAJAMAS in the kitchen one day… by the time my baby was born, it was back at 2cm or so. Removed and I didn’t feel anything due to epidural and tested - non cancerous.

You might get lucky and it just falls off!

I never knew this could happen! I’ve had some horrific internal tests following gynae issues, a traumatic birth and then secondary infertility. I currently have one that seems stable but they are pushing a hysteroscopy and I’m scared! I would only agree under a GA not being awake!
