Can stress cause a suddenly much lighter period?

Hey, I’m 33 and usually have totally normal periods, normal flow, nothing weird. But this month there’s barely anything there at all. Has anyone else had this happen? I’m definitely not pregnant, took tests and all negative. I did recently lose my grandad and there’s been a lot going on in the family, so I’m wondering if stress could cause this? I’ve been stressed before though and it’s never affected my cycle. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.

Thankyou x

Yeah, stress absolutely can affect your cycle, even if it never has before. Losing your grandad and everything going on emotionally could definitely be enough to throw things off for a month. A really light period can happen from stress, grief, anxiety, changes in sleep, eating habits, hormones etc.

I’ve known quite a few people have random “off” cycles after a stressful period in life, even when they’re normally regular. Sometimes your body just reacts differently depending on how intense things are.

If the tests are negative and you’re otherwise feeling okay, it’s probably worth just keeping an eye on it next month. But if it keeps happening, disappears completely, or you get pain/other symptoms, it’s worth checking in with a GP just to rule anything else out.

Sorry about your grandad too ❤️

It can cause a disturbance in your period. The day my dad died I started a mini period completely out of cycle. Also the day of my son’s graduation - a sudden flood!

Ah thank you so much for these replies and for the good advice and support I really appreciate it. Happy Friday to you both ! Sorry to hear about your Dad too ❤️

Yes, stress can sometimes cause lighter periods, even if it hasn’t affected you before. If it continues, a check-up with your doctor.
