Has anyone ever used Norethisterone to delay a period? And what were your side affects, did it work etc?

OP posts:
ihavebecomecomfortablynumb · 04/05/2026 18:01

I use it every time I go away, no side effects at all.

Throwawayusernameforme · 04/05/2026 18:02

It turned me into a demon monster and took several cycles for things to get back to normal. Barring absolute emergencies, I'm never using it again.

deedeemeloy · 04/05/2026 18:02

My teenager uses this when we go on holiday. No issues at all

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 04/05/2026 18:03

Yes made me a seething bag of rage and anxiety which probably ruined the holiday more than the period would have.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 04/05/2026 18:04

I would trial it before using it for any special event as some people are quite sensitive to it. Others not at all.

Flower1989999 · 04/05/2026 18:07

Yes once and never again. It worked as expected and I had no period ɓut when I came off it it when home my god the period and pain I got was awful. Period cramps like I have never had in my life I could not sleep the pain was so bad. I shpuld have just jad my period it would have been easier!

Same. That and the migraine which may or may not have been triggered by it.

Never again.

LuckyNumberFive · 04/05/2026 18:11

I use it if we have a summer holiday planned for the same time. No side effects except my next few periods come late.

If I wanted to use it again, I think my husband would actually move out for the month. I was all over the place, and that's without all the pain, spotting etc.

Ohgoose · 04/05/2026 18:25

No side effects but not totally successful. I wish I’d started it a few days earlier.

21ZIGGY · 04/05/2026 18:28

Wow the bad experiences😱 what age were you getting those?

I used it from about 12 - 30 off and on for hols with no issue.

Im in my 40s now so just wondering if hormones too sensitive at that age

Bpod1 · 04/05/2026 18:43

Hi. Norethisterone is very good but obviously not for everyone. Its a hormone treatment. I would think of it as slightly worse period symptoms as you would normally get when you come off it. If you are prone to mild stomach cramps, it will be slightly worse, can just take paracetamol for it. If you get mood swings or headaches that will be slightly worse too. Trial it, see what you think.
Also, take the exact dosage thats recommended, I think its 1 pill 3 times a day. I had a friend who "doesn't like taking meds" so only took 1 or 2 tablets a day and wondered why she was feeling bad while on them! The pills were trying to stop the period on half dosages and her body was trying to menstruate! You shouldn't be getting any symptoms while taking them, its only when you come off them that your usual symptoms but slightly worse will start.

I was late 30's when I tool it. I also had a very similar response to progesterone patches when I started HRT, literally within a couple of hours of putting the patch on I could physically feel the rage start. I take progesterone tablets now which are chemically identical to naturally produced progesterone and I feel fine on them. Norethisterone is a synthetic progestogen so I guess I'm just sensitive to synthetic hormones.

Curlysusie · 04/05/2026 21:24

I’ve used it for hols no issues

Holdonforsummer · 04/05/2026 21:31

How weird that we have all reacted so differently! Like a previous poster, it worked like a dream for me on the holiday but I had hideous period pains when I came off it and I as due on. I don’t normally get period pains and I could barely sleep. I would think twice before using it again.

Namechangedforthis25 · 04/05/2026 21:35

I used it on and off last year as travelled a lot for weddings and work

it was ok whilst on it - I did feel bloated and heavier

then when I came off I got crazy night sweats for two or three nights before my period returned.

but otherwise ok

onceaday · 04/05/2026 21:36

Only started using it for v heavy periods during perimenopause. Worked like a dream, bleeding stopped completely within 24 hours and next period was no worse. Like others have said, try it yourself and see how you get on with it

BelleEpoque27 · 04/05/2026 21:38

I used it a couple of times in my late teens but it wasn't fully successful (spotting), and I had terrible mood swings. I later found I couldn't tolerate the pill, so I think I'm just not suited to hormonal contraception.

CoffeeAndCakeBringMeJoy · 04/05/2026 21:39

Used it a couple of times, both to avoid a period whilst on holiday. No issues at all for me, but I know others who have had different experiences and would never take it again.

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 04/05/2026 21:40

I was put on it to help with my endo symptoms , about 20 years ago now….worked like a dream, reduced my endo pain by about 80% which was heaven x

emnetstrozzapreti · 04/05/2026 21:41

I've used it several times for hiking/camping trips where I really didn't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere on my period without a toilet! Worked well for me, no side effects. I've only used it in my 40s but wish I'd tried it years ago.

LyndaC91 · 04/05/2026 21:51

Thank you everyone! Mixed response but I'll definitely give it a trial run before my holiday in August.

Ineedanewsofa · 04/05/2026 21:58

As per PP it affects me really badly, I get very low mood and very angry with it. DH and I nearly got divorced after one holiday! Definitely have a trial run pre hols

Byllis · 04/05/2026 22:06

I’ve used it many times. No problems when on it and usually things have just picked up where they left off afterwards, but I have had a couple of occasions where my period after was much heavier and more painful than usual. Once I had extreme pain followed by my uterine lining coming out in one piece - I learned what a decidual cast was that day!

It hasn’t put me off using it since.

HoraceCope · 04/05/2026 22:09

I used it no issues when my periods went haywire and did not stop, peri
