Tranxemic acid

TMI - I was admitted to hospital a few days ago with super heavy bleeding and passing huge clots, literally never seen so much much blood! I had visited my GP on day 2 of profuse bleeding and prescribed Tranxemic acid tablets, they didn’t work and my bleeding got worse on day 3 to the point it was pouring out of me constantly. GP sent me to hospital where I was admitted and given 3 x IV Tranxemic acid and then moved to tablet Tranxemic acid. The IV worked well and stemmed the flow. I’m now back at home and been advised to continue with Tranxemic acid tablets for 3 days. I am feeling really achy and bleeding a little more than when I was discharged yesterday, I’ve also just passed a clot around 6cm big. Is this normal when on the tablets? I’m anxious in case I bleed heavily again.

Goodness that sounds awful, I had similar after my second child but the txa worked for me, then I had a mirena coil fitted. I’d be inclined to call the 101 (or is it 111?) to ask advice as it sounds like you need professional advice. Give them a call now - good luck

FunCrab · 02/05/2026 15:44

I too had the mirena coil fitted and never looked back.
You need to understand the cause of this.
If the cause is not known then how do they know what they are treating.
For me it was fibroids and they were causing this relentless bleeding.
However depending on your age you may want to think about options.
But first the cause of the bleeding needs investigating.

So, bit of a back story…I have fibroids and had a fibroidectomy 18months and had Merina fitted at the same time. The Merina didn’t agree with me and caused bleeding every day for 5 months. It the went MIA as it was wrapped round a fibroid high up in the uterus. Back to gynae and am awaiting a hysterectomy, been on the w/l for 10 months. I’ve been on Decapeptyl injections to shrink the fibroids prior to surgery for 10 months, they effectively put you into chemical menopause so my periods have stopped and I only get occasional very light bleeding. so this episode of bleeding was very out of the blue and scary with how much blood I lost.

Please phone the NHS, just get yourself in front of a professional

When i had bleeding I was prescribed mefenamic acid alongside tranexamic acid

Yeah me too. The transenamic acid was awful and I stopped taking it. They said to take 2 tablets twice a day I think and they are huge. I had a constant bad taste in my mouth and felt sick and dizzy. The bleeding was really heavy with clots but ended after a week and subsequent bleeds have been light so thank god I don't need them now. Hoping that big bleed was my last.

Teawithfrenchtoast · 02/05/2026 18:45

I was discharged home with 2 tablets 3 x per day for 3 days of Tranxemic acid. I can’t take mefenamic acid as it clashes with other medication I take. I’ve not had any more clots so far today and the bleeding has calmed again, not stopped but light. I am just anxious that it starts again as I’ve honestly never seen so much blood - my super absorbency tampon, pad and clothes were drenched just walking from the car to the ward 😕 had to bin my clothes when I got there

If you start feeling dizzy and light headed go back

ShowOfHands · 02/05/2026 19:26

I'm in a similar boat. Awaiting a hysterectomy due to multiple fibroids. I've been bleeding for 13 months. I too have done the waddle to A&E from the car with huge cricket ball sized clots (and my tampon) slithering out the end of my trousers. I stood in reception while a puddle formed around me.

Like you, tranexamic acid IV works but the tablets do not. I've tried everything and the only thing which really works is high dose Norethisterone and this doesn't stop the bleeding completely but reduces it enough to function.

I have Zoladex injections to shrink everything/induce temporary menopause but they don't seem to do anything to the bleeding/pain. Who knows if the fibroids are shrinking.

I moved to the urgent surgery list 17 weeks ago. Urgent list means surgery within 12 weeks...

I'm currently unfit for surgery anyway as I'm too anaemic.

I really hope you get your hysterectomy soon 😔 the fibroids I had removed have grown back and doubled in size in the last 18months, biggest one is 18cm. Could you request a change in injection? Decapeptyl has been great for me up until now, although it’s obviously not shrinking the fibroids.

I might ask about decapeptyl. I've been on Zoladex for 3.5 months and have noticed no change for the better. In fact, I'm probably bleeding more and I'm definitely in more pain.

I really hope they arrange your surgery soon. Do you know your current wait list times?

Average wait times are 94 weeks I think, I am currently priority 3 out of 6 but the gynae ward were going to raise it with my consultant gynaecologist to see if I can be expedited.

Have you been checked for anemia? That would seem to be pretty urgent after all the bleeding you have had. I’d be surprised if you were not anemic.

I had an iron infusion as my haemoglobin levels were low.

Tranxemic acid didn’t work for me which I know isn’t helpful

i came here to say take pictures of the blood loss and every single clot. It was the only way I got people to take me seriously

i’d ring 111 now and get their advice

I'm P3 as well which is supposed to be within 12 weeks where I am but average wait is currently 23 weeks with a maximum wait of 39 weeks. Basically, who knows?!

Teawithfrenchtoast · 14/05/2026 17:04

bit of an update. I finally stopped bleeding last Saturday, and have started to bleed again this afternoon. It’s still light at the moment but I am anxious after how heavy I bled 2 weeks ago 😕

OP posts:

I had some success today. I emailed my consultant directly and told him that things are getting worse. I even had an allergic reaction to an iron infusion so now can't have another one and with the persistent bleeding, my iron levels are not improving.

He's moved me from priority 3 to priority 2 and added me to his colleagues' lists as well. He said it should be in the near future as a result. Worth a try?

I hope this current bleed comes to nothing. Have you tried restarting the tranexamic acid?
