Is continuous bleeding normal after Mirena coil fitted for starting HRT

I had the Mirena coil so I could start HRT 5 weeks ago.

I bled the first day. Then had a great 2 weeks. Then my period was due. I came on 4 days early and haven’t stopped bleeding since.

I bleed daily. A mix of types of blood from gunky brown (sorry tmi) to fresh. It’s not super heavy, but I need to wear and change panty liners. Also I might have nothing for a bit and then a gush. I don’t get any respite from it. Not a single day.

I hate wearing panty liners or pads so have turned to the light tampons. But this feels like a never ending period of 3 weeks!!!!!!! My normal periods used to be 3 days.

I feel utterly hopeless. It’s ruining my sex life.

I have got the holiday of a life time in 11 weeks. It’s a 5 week trip abroad and it’s long awaited. I cannot bleed right through it!

Can anyone tell me is this normal? I was warned of blood spotting for the ‘first few months’ but I literally imagined a little spot of blood. Not a effing light period!

I’m using oestrogel. 2 pumps inside thighs.

Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

When I had mine put in I bled for twelve weeks and then never again. It was worth the aggro for the first weeks. Hopefully it stops before your holiday. I imagine it will.
Apparently this is normal for the mirena. Fingers crossed for you!

Thank you. I could cry at the moment. I feel like everything is worse than it was. Fingers crossed.

I had mine fitted for the same reason as you 3 weeks ago. I actually came on my period the morning it was being fitted and the nurse said my period should stop. It didn’t, it did get lighter but I bled for about 2 weeks. I’ve been spotting brown gunk ever since.
I really hope it stops soon. So no advice, just solidarity.
I don’t believe you are supposed to use tampons for the first few months BTW.

I’ve had this, it’s been about a year now! A scan showed adenomyosis so I’m waiting for gynaecologist appointment so I can ask for a hysterectomy

Had one, bled for 9 months. Had it removed.

Oh no. I’m sorry. Hope you can recover from that soon. X

Oh my. I am going for a check Tuesday. I might book a removal then just in case it doesn’t stop.

It’s awful isn’t it. I just don’t think I was prepared for this.

Bled for a year. Having mine taken out soon

mustreadmorebooks · 02/05/2026 08:38

I bled almost constantly the entire time I had it. I put up with it for a year and had it removed when it didn’t settle. They tried suggesting it when I went for HRT 10 years later and I refused. Now on patches instead.

LlamaBasket · 02/05/2026 08:43

Oh dear. I don’t know how long to tolerate it.

For those of you who removed it, how long did it take to return to normal and stop bleeding. I really want to be ok for this holiday.
