1st period after 2 years on coil

I had the Mirena coil fitted two years ago, almost to the day. After 6 months of bleeding g/spotting, I was absolutely thrilled not to get another period! It was a miracle! I did have the occasional spotting, but it was fine.

Today I have started a period, and I am gutted! I had to dig out an old pad from a handbag, because I haven’t bought any pads or tampons for 2 years.

I will hate it if I now start having monthly periods again. Has anyone experienced similar? I did wonder whether the coil has moved or something.

I was supposed to have this coil for another 8 years but I’m wondering what’s the point if I’m having periods again.

I do have a GP appointment in a few weeks so will mention it then, but looking for some wisdom/experiences in the meantime.

thanks!

I’ve had a coil for 5 years, had it for heavy periods and flooding, I’m 56 now. Like you I had 6 months of spotting at the beginning, then I’ve had various periods of bleeding. I had a heavy bleed when the coil moved, but it needed a hysteroscopy to put it right. Then before Xmas I had some more bleeding and found I had a polyp at another hysteroscopy. Then finally I had no spotting, until I had a period. At my age I’m wondering when it will end. But I assume I would go back to heavy periods if I had it removed.

Thanks @PersephoneParlormaid I also had it fitted to hep with really heavy periods, not for contraception. This is why it’s such a blow to have my period return. If it only gave me 18 months reprieve then I’m really wondering what’s the point.

however so far it seems to be a much lighter so far so I have to consider that a blessing.

I will talk to my GP about it just in case there’s anything else going on.
