Can Mirena wear off early?

I have had a mirena coil for 4 or so years now. My pms has gradually got worse and worse over the last 6 months. Period length getting a bit irregular. Boob's ridiculously sore which stopped when I initially got the mirena. I appreciate I am still protected from pregnancy but can it essentially start wearing off in other ways before the 8 year mark?

Yes and I thought it was 5years. Ask to have it checked (ultrasound) mine got embedded in a fibroid and the eventual one year wait to have it removed under GA it got worse and worse.

I’m at 7 years and getting some breakthrough bleeding and hormonal symptoms so I think mine is definitely wearing out. I’m sure it’s ok for contraception but not how I’m feeling hormonally IYSWIM!

I have probably had similar symptoms over the years but not as consistent as they are now. The progesterone could be wearing out for you.

Yes it can. I had one fitted for endo, it was really successful, but by year 4 I was starting to get breakthrough pain and light periods. After a chat with my GP am she agreed that she would replace it early. I had four consecutive coils over a period of 17 years.

Talk to your GP and see if they will replace it.
