Hysterectomy - please recommend a consultant who will give me one

Hi there
I'm 50, have adenomyosis and terribly heavy and painful periods. Ihave not tried and absolutely do not want to try a mirena coil. I have tried lots of other oral hormone medications.
I am quite clear that I want a hysterectomy. I want the complete end of any bleeding. I am aware of an accept the risks of this. Recovery should not be a problem. I went to a private consultant today. He will not perform a hysterectomy and will only offer uterine ablation. I understand that this does not stop the pain of adenomyosis and has a high failure rate where adenomyosis present. I have seen lots of threads with consultants that will offer a hysterectomy. BUPA have said I can get a second opinion but I need to find the right consultant to get a second opinion from.
Ideally consultant would be in the South-East/home counties/London.
Any advice?

why did the first consultant thing it wasn't the right option for you? that's most likely to be the key.

Was it a male or female consultant. Was s/he a surgeon?

I'm not saying this is what happened, but medical misogyny is a thing....

Edit, I see it was a male. Need to read posts properly!

dnasurprise · 14/04/2026 20:36

Yes was a male surgeon. View was that hysterectomy a big operation and should not be carried out without exploring all the options. I have adenomyosis. From everything I am reading uterine ablation is not appropriate. For my own reasons I am not prepared to try anymore hormonal medication. He just didn't like the fact that I knew my own mind on what I wanted.
I'm mainly keen to get any recommendations of consultants (private no problem, I'll pay happily to get rid of it) that will do hysterectomies.

The lady who did mine was so good and I would happily recommend but I’m in the NW of England. I would try to find a female for a second opinion.

I told a female consultant that I’d already had years of my life ruined by my fibroids and wanted the nuclear option, with zero chance of any recurrence or of ever having to be on an NHS gynaecology waiting list again. She accepted that immediately. Not in your geographical area, though, but this was private with Spire Healthcare.

MabelsBeats · 14/04/2026 20:44

Sorry should have said mine was also private, BUPA covered me, via Spire Healthcare.

There’s a lady in Lincolnshire and lots of people from Notts/Leicester visit her clinic -
bit of a trek for you tho but will find her details

surgical hysterectomy for Adenomyosis, endometriosis, fibroids etc etc etc .
I had mine done at the Chiltern hospital.

Would thoroughly recommend Mrs. Sarah Hussain. I had an abdominal hysterectomy performed by her (and co-incidentally an all female team) at Spire East London.

Thank you all very much. There are quite a few options here. This is where mumsneg really outdoes itself.
