7 days after miscarriage - smelly brown blood

I had a miscarriage this time last week at 12 weeks pregnant, I hadn’t had my dating scan yet so baby may have died a while before. I had an internal scan the next day and they confirmed they couldn’t see the sac. Bleeding has tapered off since then and I haven’t had any pain but in the last couple of days I am bleeding brown blood which has a horrendous smell. I’m going to call my GP first thing tomorrow and ask if they can refer me for an urgent gynaecological appointment but until then I’m wondering if anyone can tell me of similar experiences and if in your case it was an infection (as I fear) or if it was just old/stale blood which eventually stopped?

I’m sorry you’re going through this, I think I’d go to the Emergency Department. With it being the weekend you don’t want to be waiting over the weekend if you do need treatment.

It sounds like an infection. Call 111, they will be able to make arrangements for you to either attend hospital or gp. What is your temperature and pulse?

Brown blood can be old blood, but a strong bad smell is not normal and can point to an infection after miscarriage.Get checked as soon as possible, it’s better to be safe here.

I’m so sorry for your loss and that you’re going through this as well.
Brown blood is older blood and if it smells, that could indicate infection or some retained cells, definitely get checked out.
Have you managed to get an appointment? You could also try contacting your local EPAS - early pregnancy advisory service - they were really helpful with me when I’ve suffered losses.

Just realised that this post is actually a few weeks old now - hope you got help and you’re doing OK now and recovering well x
