POP or Mirena for heavy periods?

LondonLady1980 · 27/02/2026 12:55

Me and my GP are discussing me having either the Mirena or taking the POP to address my heavy periods.

I've had two Mirena's in the past and all I remember is the pain of having them put in and I just can't face it again. I also had a really bad experience when it came to taking one of them out too.....so I don't have positive associations with them at all.

My GP is really pushing for it over the POP though.

Plus....it may seem illogical but my periods are so, so, bad.....the clots and flooding are just ridiculous and I can't even imagine how a Mirena would stay in place and not get flushed out with the next period as I'm assuming it doesn't work straight away with regards to stopping periods? (or lightening them)?

Does anyone have any advice or experiences to share?

Thank you.

I started taking the POP for this reason. I had annoying spotting for a few months, but it was way less disruptive than my periods

I haven't had a period for years now, it's absolutely marvellous 🙂

Thanks SilverBlue,

How bad was the spotting?? Were you still needing to frequently use sanitary products? Or do you meant you literally just had some infrequent blood spotting in your underwear every now and then?

And how long did it take until your periods stopped completely?

have you been checked for fibroids?

have you been checked for fibroids?

I had an USS about 5 years ago which they said was fine, but I'm having another one next week as things seem to be getting worse.

I think I spotted on and off for about three months, and just wore a liner not full pads or anything. Not enough for a tampon or moon cup for sure.

It wasn't every day but definitely a few days each week

No bleeding at all after 3-4 months.

I endo so really bad pelvic pain and really heavy bleeding the pop didn’t stop my periods but they were at times lighter, I have had a mirena for the last 6 years and although I experienced bleeding and significant pain for the first 3 months it finally settled and it had been great since then.

was in exactly the same position as you – really heavy periods, flooding and awful clots. It was horrific. I had a scan which showed thickening of the womb lining and fibroids. They removed those, and while I was under anaesthetic they inserted a Mirena coil at the same time.

For me, that combination made a huge difference. It might be worth asking about a scan first (if you haven’t had one already) and whether treating anything underlying, plus fitting a Mirena, could be an option for you. It’s definitely something I’d push to discuss properly with your GP or consultant.

Been a year once a month I’ll get a headache and a light bleed like maybe regular pad level for a couple of days. It’s been amazing fucking hate periods

My periods had started to go crazy last year, I’ve just turned 40. I’d miss a month or two then have a really long, heavy period, flooding, clots. Then a normal month. Then it would skip a month and come back even worse.
after a 5 weeks heavy bleed over Xmas and new year I seen a gynaecologist who did an internal ultrasound and said everything did look okay, she gave me Slinda for 6 months which is a POP. I also have ferritin of 5 and Hb of 9.8 so need iron.

it stopped the bleeding from the first tablet, spotted for 4-5 days, then nothing all month. End of the first packet I started bleeding again, really heavy, clots, flooding, couldn’t leave the house for 2 days.

gradually it died off, and I’ve spotted a little each day for about 2 weeks into the second packet but all okay at the moment.

my sleep is brilliant now, my skin has improved.
but the pack is coming to an end next week so I’m just waiting to see if things have calmed down this time.

I’ve read it can take 6 months plus to settle things! So I’m really hoping it works for me.

if it doesn’t improve I may think about a Mirena but I worry about side effects and not being able to have it removed swiftly if it doesn’t agree with me.
