Heavy period

I didn’t have a period for 4 months. I am not pregnant. My period came back last weekend. I am on day 7 and it’s heavier than usual. I rang the doctor on day 5 and they said the heavy bleed is because I will be shedding more than usual. They said to call next week if still on my period as I would need progesterone to help stop the period.

I am quite anxious as I don’t like losing blood in case I am anaemic as I had been taking my iron and other supplements this week and that’s when the period started.

Obviously I will go back to my doctor but just wondered if anyone else had a heavy period after not having one for a while. Thanks.

could be peri meno then but check with GP just to rule out Fibroids causing heavy bleeds

I am in peri meno at 47 and also had a fibroid diagnosis last year, no surgery recommended yet, wait and watch for now, going back to doc soon to see if fibroids have grown/need intervention, hopefully will be offered a scan again

GP can also immediately prescribe Tranaxemic acid to relieve the heavy bleeding

All the time. Anemia is an issue, but I prefer treating the anemia than the other treatment options which carry negative side effects for me.

Yes I’ve had similar this past year since turning 40. I’d miss a month or two, then have a really really heavy long period. Then a normal month, and then skip one, back to the heavy bleeding, and over Xmas it lasted 5 weeks!

i saw a gynaecologist who did an internal pelvic ultrasound and said everything looked ok. She’s given me the progesterone only pill…but that can take time to settle.
