Left sided rib/under rib pain- help

I posted this in chat but realised I should have put it here so fingers crossed!

I’m assuming this is costochondritis with possibly slipping rib syndrome and it’s been annoying me for years (incidentally, started happening about a year after the birth of my second child, which was a section.) however, my Saturday anxiety has pushed me to ask Mumsnet if this sounds normal or if it’s something that I should actually get checked.

Two things:

  1. muscular feeling pain over my left rib cage, sensitive to press but no sensitivity if I push under the rib cage. I feel it more if I twist but it’s generally always there. Right side ribs sensitive to press too but only notice if it I press them.
  2. pinching/catching sensation if I fold forward too far (particularly towards the left.) this can be bloody awful and I need to stretch out for it to go back to normal

the reqson I’m noticing it more is that when I try to trim my bikini line towards the left, or if I lean over to pick up something on my left, i can feel it about to go.

i need the wisdom of other women please. Thank you

It sounds like classic Costo. Horrible isn't it?

I used to get it for about 6 weeks a couple of times a year. It sounds silly but I stopped wearing a bra and haven't had it since.

Yes so horrible! Haven’t tried no bra but will! Thanks for replying x

Just spotted your post and wanted to add that this definitely sounds like costo - especially if you feel tenderness when you press on the rib cage. It's horrible isn't it - had it for months several years ago and was in agony. It did eventually just disappear. I used to feel the pain when I moved in certain positions and also if I coughed or sometimes breathed in deeply. Hope it resolves soon

Costochondritis or also Tietze syndrome (T is slightly different but equally as painful). I see a chiropractor for mine and she is like magic.

Any respite @MarshmallowWoman?

MarshmallowWoman · 09/03/2026 18:18

Yes thanks, it comes and goes and I think I’m much clearer about what it is thanks to this thread!

I would definitely look into Tietze syndrome as it can be caused by poor posture and can be easily corrected, you don’t need to suffer.
