Heavy, long periods at 40?!

Did anyone of you have a massive change to your periods as you hit 40? Mine have always been pretty easy, not particularly heavy, always within 27/28 days, no cramps.
Until last summer when I started missing months, and then I’d bleed really heavily for about 2 weeks, have a good few months and then miss one again followed by a long heavy bleed. I seen a gynae who did an internal ultrasound and said it was all fine. I’d been bleeding for 5 weeks at that point.
She did bloods, and prescribed Slinda (a progestin only pill) which worked immediately and the bleeding stopped bar a day or two of light spotting. The rest of the month was fine, no side effects until the end of the pack and I started bleeding again and it’s been heavy and annoying, bad cramps which I’ve never had.
Started the second pack of pills now and hope it tapers off, otherwise I’ll have to see a GP as can’t get a gynae appointment nearby for ages!
Blood results all fine apart from iron deficiency anemia, so now on twice daily iron which has been fine.
What do I ask for next? a Mirena?
I hate periods now!

My periods had always been 40/50/60 + days when I was younger, and that suited me fine. In my 40’s my periods very slowly crept closer and closer together until they were around every 24 days. By this time they had also slowly got heavier and I had flooding, but I assumed it was normal at this age. Then I felt awful and discovered my ferritin was in my boots. So I got a Mirena coil and I wish I’d had it years earlier.
If I had my time again I’d have it in my early 40’s to prevent the trouble I had.

thanks for your reply. I also have almost next to no ferritin stores left, and if this bleeding carries on every month the iron will never get them back up. I think I will request a Mirena when I can get an appointment
