Weeing in a car

BookwormBeryl · 11/02/2026 09:31

Yes - very embarassing but its worth asking! Due to a knee replacement 2 years ago, (good but wont now improve any further), I can no longer crouch to do a wee. I am now incontinent to the point where I am considering buying a Shewee thing since I drive quite a lot, the urge can be sudden and the best thing would be to pull up in a layby but stay in the car (apparently doing a wee outside is illegal?) Problem is that I wear pull down trousers and the Shewee only works if you wear zipped ones (to let the end poke out) or a dress (the latter is very rare and only in summer if at all). I can put zips in all my 5 pairs of current trousers but am not that keen, its faffy. Any suggestions anyone? I dont mind gritty details (if pemitted on here) in the slightest.

Nobody is going to give you ‘gritty’ details of their incontinence.

Sprogonthetyne · 11/02/2026 13:46

I would probably look at pads instead of having to find a place to pull over in a hurry. You're not really meant to pull onto the hard shoulder unless it an emergency, (needing a wee doesn't count) and depending where you are it can take a while to reach a lay-by.

If you want to try the she-wee, just get one pare of travelling trousers to try it out, but I'd probably still get out of the car at least while your getting use to it to avoid any mishaps.

Have you spoken to a continence nurse about this? They’d be better placed to offer you advice on how to manage this.

MissMoneyFairy · 11/02/2026 15:35

How do you manage at home, have you sought the reason for your incontinence

Allseeingallknowing · 11/02/2026 15:36

Always pants ?

StealthyHealthy · 11/02/2026 15:37

What you're describing is urinary urgency, not incontinence as such.

Can't you just make sure you take regular service stop breaks on long drives and wear the incontinence knickers so that if you got desperate and couldn't hold it, you could just pee without undressing.

But as a PP suggested, ask for a referral to a continence nurse or women's physio as urgency can be fixed with the right exercises and tactics.

Allseeingallknowing · 11/02/2026 15:38

OP with the shower surely it’s easier with pull down pants?

The problems seems to be with crouching down. A toilet at home would be ok

You obviously don’t know Mumsnet!

Clefable · 11/02/2026 15:46

You won’t get the angle easily in a car seat for a Shewee to work properly. It’ll just flow back out the top. Have you sought any medical help for the incontinence?

RanchRat · 11/02/2026 16:08

See your GP about your urge incontinence, but in the meantime try Tena Super pants, in the smallest size you can get into - they will take quite a lot of wee and are comfortable. I think you might find spillage a problem with a Shewee if you are in a hurry and flustered.

Isobel201 · 11/02/2026 16:09

if I know I'm going to be on a long journey, I plan to make stops or at least know where the nearest services it. On top of wearing period pants (they work for incontience) and a pad if necesssary. On most motorways they give you the miles to the nearest one.

wishingonastar101 · 11/02/2026 16:26

I had a shewee thing for camping and festivals. I don't rate them tbh... you can use the funnel bit out in the open - like the wee free flows - but it was messy and inconvenient.

If you use the ones with the bottle, so you use the funnel to wee into a bottle which you can then contain and store until you can dispose of properly - the bottle is hard to empty and clean. Was a faff.

I found a weird solution though... might not work with your inability to squat. You know those tubs of brownies, millionaire shortbreads, flapjacks etc that you get in M&S. Get one of them... eat all the brownies... yum... then you get a really handy portable-potty which has a lid, you can empty easily and chuck out when you no longer need it.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 11/02/2026 16:30

I have some harem trousers with an elasticated waist I could smuggle Sheehan into, never mind a shewee

a friend of mine rates PortaJohns from Amazon. They unroll so are
lo g and thin and squashy, and use a chemical to turn wee into a gel. I think they would work better for you

they would fit inside the trousers , so no zip needed

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 11/02/2026 16:30

Shergar! Whoever Sheehan is, he must be feeling nervous

The point was rather that I do know mumsnet, hence trying to warn people not to indulge.

Negroany · 11/02/2026 23:54

Doing a wee outside is not illegal.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 21/02/2026 22:49

You can get personal flask type things which you could use standing up. Look on Amazon.

JetSkiRentals · 21/02/2026 22:54

Where are you driving where you can’t plan stops at services?

PashaMinaMio · 21/02/2026 22:57

Pull in and go around to passenger near side.
Open passenger door and rear passenger door.

Sit on edge of passenger seat and lower your bare ass as far down over the sill as you can. Support your weight with your arms.
Let it flow.

Traffic coming up alongside you (in lane 1) on the Mway might see a bit of you but the rear passenger door will shield you. Who cares anyway?

Have a practice at home on your drive (without actually peeing) Always carry tissues in glove box.

JetSkiRentals · 21/02/2026 22:54

Where are you driving where you can’t plan stops at services?

When you are on the motorway for say a 3 hour journey, but traffic grinds to a solid halt and doesn't move for another 2 hours (as one example).

When alone, I’ve had to resort to a bucket in lane 3 of the M4 and a sandwich box in an emergency on the M40 before now…

Also depending on your age, oestrogen vaginal pessaries as part of a HRT regime have definitely helped - oestrogen positively affects bladder receptors.

Edited to add, yes, after knee replacement, it does add a whole other layer of complications (having accidentally fallen turtle on my back into a hedgerow ditch and struggled to get out because the knee doesn’t bend in the same way…)

bugglybuggly · 21/02/2026 23:25

@PashaMinaMio I was just about to say something similar. Except I pull my elasticated trousers down as far as necessary then put a jug over my undercarriage. Easy peasy - I do it all the time. Keep tissues and nappy sacks in the car.

moanycoo · 21/02/2026 23:37

In the car I always have a towel, an ice cream tub with lid, hankies and wipes. I put the towel over the seat and hover above the tub. I have dodgy hips and this is much less painful than trying to squat outdoors, as when I need to go, I need to go!

How do you manage at home, have you sought the reason for your incontinence

Because @BookwormBeryl can use a toilet at home and doesn't have to crouch .

I get a bit fed up of posters saying go to the docs , why don't you do the right exercises ,
Some bladder ( and bowl ) issues can not be solved .
@BookwormBeryl if I am going on a journey that I know I can't stop on or get uncontrolled muscle spasms I use Always pants , they are far from glamorous but do the job.
Tena tend to make larger more absorbent pants if Always are not enough.
I also have covered chairs with puppy training pads just incase there is a further issue.
