keeponplodding7 · 11/02/2026 08:13

Has anyone used this? I have some - bought from USA - sitting here looking at me and I’m scared but also so fed up of feeling this way thinking it’s worth a shot to get the ph level down……

What is bv?

FatherDickByrne · 11/02/2026 08:34

Don’t know about boric acid for bacterial vaginosis, sorry, but BV is horrid so just coming on to give you sympathy, OP. Guessing GP is no help then?

Not really. Been out on antibiotics but haven’t helped. Doing all the right things - water no soap, air, probiotics, kefir etc . Wondering if it’s perimenopause as it didn’t ever happen until I hit about 40. When I finish this round of antibiotics i think I try vaginal estrogen cream. It’s exhausting!

A friend of mine swore by it. I reacted to it, it felt someone had splashed acid all over my bits. I would test a small patch to see how it works for you.

That’s what I’m afraid off! Acid sounds so wrong doesn’t it!

It doesn't sound like a good idea as boric acid is banned in Europe due to concerns over reproductive toxicity and long-term health risks...

coolpattern · 11/02/2026 22:24

I’ve read it’s effective when you scoop the powder into a gelatine casing and insert overnight for several nights in a row

Frannieisnthappy · 11/02/2026 22:39

Have you tried Balance Activ - I used to really suffer with BV and antibiotics never helped. Balance Activ did. Worth a shot.

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 11/02/2026 22:49

Here to say it worked really well for me. Just one treatment did the trick, unbelievably. Yes, I got it in capsule form, from a company called pure boric, I think? The rest of the capsules are sat unused at the back of my bathroom cabinet because I did not need more than one. Genuinely life enhancing stuff. Do it! Think of it like a tampon and the 'insertion' step will go just fine

Yes, that's how the kind I used came, in a tablet form that is supposed to dissolve slowly inside the vagina. Did not notice any acid-feeling after I inserted it, just clear watery discharge the day after. And no more maddening itchiness.

You can buy it on eBay

I have a supply and it is significantly cheaper and more effective than using a £12 pack of Canesten each time.

I’ve never heard about it causing a burning sensation but I guess it’s possible. I don’t think it’s a common side effect.

chessmen · 11/02/2026 23:17

Boric acid definitely worked immediately but wasn't a long term solution as the BV would come back after a few days if I stopped using it.

I think if you have recurring BV and want a quick fix for embarrassing symptoms then it may be helpful to have an "emergency supply" in the cupboard.

I've also heard others have had success with it. But some like me found they needed to use it continously.

I tried lots of different probiotics, diet, etc and none worked. Damn you antibiotics! I'm similar age and wonder if its just harder to rebalance after a certain age?

I've switched all vitamins to a company called British Supplements (no connection) and I ended up getting their probiotics (as their other products were excellent).

Expensive but (fingers crossed) seems to have sorted it and I've even come off them now after a few weeks.

My discharge still doesn't seem perfectly balanced but there's not that distinctive BV odour.

namechangeabc123 · 11/02/2026 23:29

Boric acid was the only thing that worked for me and I had chronic bv for years. I needed to keep using it for a while, as a trigger would bring the bv back, then after a while I stopped needing it.
If you insert with some pure coconut oil it prevents bleeding and irritation.

Oh wow thanks. That’s tempting. I think the only thing holding me back is if I react badly and then I’m in a worse place. I am away now for a week so going to take probiotics etc and if no better then I may bite the bullet thank you

I have - it didn’t seem to help. Currently on Clindamycin but can’t seem to notice much change yet. Thank you though

I was going to say the same, I use the individual sqeezy gel things that you insert.
They've helped immensely and also give me a moisture as I can get quite dry down there these days - that seems to trigger BV symptoms.
