Mirena - checking the threads?

Hello, those of you with Mirenas are you checking your threads?
I had a Mirena fitted a few months ago for heavy periods, and was told to check the threads a few days afterwards and then regularly. I did try, but without any success at all. However, I am certain the Mirena is in place and working because I've had a dramatic change in my periods.
At the moment we're using condoms as well, just in case, which kind of seems to defeat one of the plus points about having it fitted. Do i have to go back to the GP to have it checked do you think? And then, what, do the same thing every month if I can't feel them? It seems a bit of a flaw in the system.
BTW in case it's relevant it was a really difficult fitting because apparently I have a sharply angled cervix. Thanks for any opinions.

I'm 4.5 years in and have never ever checked 😬 but it has been the best 4.5 years of my life in terms of periods (none) and hormones (stable)

You could book into a sexual health clinic place perhaps and just ask for reassurance that it all looks ok?

I'm on my second Mirena and I must admit I've never checked the threads.

Weirdly I had a smear test today, and while she was up there she asked me if I check my threads. When I said not really she told me not to worry, because if it dislodges I'll know because my heavy periods will come back.

I can’t feel the threads, I do need to book the GP as 7 mths in and still light bleeding most days

20 years of coils being fitted. Must say i checked first time when it was put in. And never since. Once on a smear the nurse said she couldn't see them and referred me for a scan...but it was fine.

Thanks that's reassuring! I guess I should go and get it checked at least for this first time and then hopefully I can just assume all is ok after that. I can tell it's working as have gone from completely debilitating periods to nothing, so that's a win for sure.

I can't feel mine and they said I probably wouldn't because of the angle of my uterus, but I know it's working. I wouldn't worry.

Third coil so that must be 15 years plus and I have never found my ‘threads’. I think it’s a myth at this point🤣 always been there when needed for a coil change though

fashioncrimes · 29/01/2026 18:42

I was never able to find my threads, I think I just have very short fingers! Every once in a while though I'd get my partner to check, just for reassurance.

t1lly · 04/02/2026 22:41

Thank you everyone that is very reassuring! (although a bit frustrated for us all its not more clear/obvious) - thanks!

I hope that settles down for you soon, hopefully it will be worth it when you get there

I have had mirena coils since 2008 and never been able to find the threads. Also had no periods and no pregnancies

Stand with one leg on the side of the bath, bear down and put your fingers in your vagina towards your tailbone. They feel like wirey hairs and can be flush with your cervix. If you’re worried get one of the nurses to have a look
