Amitriptyline

Sorry I know there are about a hundred threads on this probably, my GP recently prescribed me a low dose of Amitriptyline to help with insomnia and headaches, I have only been taking it for a week and all ok but I have found I have a lot of urine retention with it. I guess you swap one problem for another! Is this a common side effect anyone has experienced? Also is it hard to come off of a low dose once you have been on them for a while? I'm a little nervous in that respect about getting addicted to them.

Thanks if you got this far!

Yes I think the urine retention is normal and I don’t recall any issues coming off a low dose. Hope it helps you.

Thank you @FuzzyWolf that's really reassuring

Phone the GP and they will prescribe a diuretic. I had this side effect with. BP meds.

Balloonhearts · 10/01/2026 20:38

You won't get addicted to a low dose. I took 50mg for years and just stopped. I take 100mg now and probably would have to taper them off now.

I've never had that side effect, only dry mouth but usually side effects resolve within 2 weeks.

Go back to the GP. There is a wide range of options and they can find you one that doesn’t give you side effects, that’s how big the range is, so no point not trying.

I’m on 10mg per day - never noticed any urine retention. After approx 4 weeks it’s effect kicked in and really helped my chronic pain.
i came off it gradually when I was pregnant - but had no issues coming off it

I took it for 18 months for nerve pain in my foot. It also helped with my sleep, my sleep did get a lot worse when I came off it.

I take 30mg for nerve pain, no issues odd time I’ve forgotten to take it. I sleep better with it not had any side effects
