Recurring UTI

I got a UTI about 3 weeks ago, first time around I got antibiotics on a private prescription through Boots, 3 days nitrofutantoin twice a day - worked a treat. Until it came back 2 days after I finished the tablets. This time I went to GP - she took a sample, prescribed another 3 days of the same. Again, worked well, finished course of tablets. Today, 2 days after finishing tablets it has come back with a vengeance and I feel dreadful. Doctor has asked me to go back in tomorrow, and sample has grown e.coli. I have upped my fluids and been absolutely fastidious with cleanliness.

not had to deal with UTIs before this episode, and worried I’m going to be fobbed off with another 3 days of the same tablets and be back in this position again come the weekend.

Do I push for a longer course of tablets or something else?

They should have a protocol in place that triggers further investigation after x many incidents recorded in a time frame. As this is your third time in 3 weeks
i imagine your dr will see that and follow the protocol. Now they know the bacteria they can prescribe a more specific antibiotic than just a generic one so hope you feel better soon!

I wonder how old you are, as recurring uti's can respond well to vaginal estrogen. I think I'm right in saying most drs would be more likely to prescribe if you're peri or menopausal.

This happened to me turned out it was virginal astrophy due to low estrogen went on estradiol and I was fine.
