Infection vaginal but not thrush

Hi I’m 47 and went to the doctors with abnormal bleeding. I spotted for 2 weeks and then turned into period. I did have really bad thrush after a holiday abroad in September.
she examined me and said she could see lots of white around my cervix which she thought was thrush. Sent swabs away.
i then receive a text saying the swabs haven't shown any thrush but possibly a different infection, one that is more commonly found on the skin but can occasionally cause genital infections. I have been put on Floxicillian antibiotics.
has anyone had this before?

I guess if the Dr was unable to pinpoint the infection , then you are unlikely to get a diagnosis on here . You've been given the antibiotics to cure it , so that's good and hopefully it will work .

Don’t want a diagnosis just wondering if anyone had had anything similar seems strange and worrying

Did they say what the infection was called? You could ask for a telephone appointment to go over it if you are still unsure.

I've had many varied vaginal infections including after childbirth/hysteroscopy/polypi removal etc.

I had 9 sorts of antibiotics after DD was born before they finally swabbed me and discovered it was pseudomonas and I needed co-amoxiclav.

I've also been swabbed a day apart at GP and GUM clinic, GPs came back clear, GUM clinic found thrush and BV. The clinic Drs swab and then have a lab on site to immediately put sample under microscopes for diagnosis.

So sadly, yes, have had similar and recommend next time if you can trying GUM clinic as they can diagnose a far greater range than GP.

Also myHRT pessaries give me thrush symptoms

Do you have the NHS app? If so your swab result will probably be on there.

Cb700 · 29/10/2025 16:31

Do GP’s not know loads about gynaecology stuff then.
no don’t have the app. Had really bad health anxiety in the past so made me more anxious

It's more that GUM clinics have the ability to test samples for a far wider range of infections/viruses than GPs have access to - and if it's like mine they do it all in one go, consult, test, diagnose and prescribe so it makes it quicker and easier.

Sorry about your health anxiety but this doesn't sound like something that's concerning, if you've been given fluclox it means they know whatever you have is sensitive to it. So that's a good thing

@Cb700 Not in my experience, no. They know very little about the menopause.
