High blood pressure

So to preface this I have been to doctors already but I forgot to ask the following.

Is there any stage I should worry about how high it has got?

At the doctor's it was 185/115. Over the weekend I got readings at home of over 210/120.

I have been getting really bad headaches but not sure if this is related to the blood pressure or just coincidence.

I do have tablets (amlodipine) but can't start these until the blood test results are back.

That is far too high and 210/120 is in fact a medical emergency ! Have you been given medication to take if not you need to go to your nearest Accident and Emergency to be seen to or go straight back to your doctor I am a retired nurse Your Blood Pressure needs to be monitored especially in view of the fact that you are getting headaches !

Not a doctor, but that sounds dangerously high to me. I'd call 111 and they will most likely tell you to go to A&E and possibly even send an ambulance. Headaches with blood pressure that high could mean an imminent risk of stroke.

My dh has had reading this high. And had the annoying wait till he could start medicine. When they did tests. It did come down with the medication. Just took a bit to get the right medication and dose.
Headaches will probably be linked. He got them a lot when it was high .
He felt a lot better when it was under control.

I would call gp and say its gone higher and just get advice . Better to check then not .
Drink plenty of water . That was one thing my dh was told by the hospital. It helps lower it .

Drink lots of water and go for a walk. Then measure it again. If it’s still high ring 111.

BakedBeansforabrain · 06/10/2025 16:54

I was told if it goes above 180 you should go straight to A & E

3beesinmybonnet · 06/10/2025 17:02

I went for a routine healthcheck at the GPs a few years back - my BP top figure was 192, can't remember the lower figure. They checked it several times, no improvement, sent me to a + e, and I took my first Amlodipine that night. I'd also had headaches but thought it was normal.

Please go to a +e, or ring 111, OP, as a matter of urgency.

When are your blood tests back?

Millionsofmonkeys · 06/10/2025 17:09

My first home reading was 201/90 - not as bad as yours, but I was absolutely terrified taking it. The next morning when I was a bit calmer it was 160/85 ish which helped me think I wasn't about to die.

I immediately started taking beetroot shots daily (disgusting) and that actually improved it quite significantly, by the time I was started on amlodipine it was about 140 ish over 75ish most of the time. I exercise religiously 3x a week (swimming) ,cut out cream and reduced butter and cheese and try to eat more leaves!

These are the shots I take, very chilled: James White Drinks Beet It Beetroot Stamina Shot | Holland & Barrett share.google/fcJF9B48M9yXOFTzH

I went to A&E for something else, they discovered my blood pressure was similar to yours. They gave me amlodipine immediately, which brought it down a bit, then told me to get an emergency GP appointment for the next day.

Edited

I took amlodipine it didn’t suit me, when I got up in the morning my ankles were ok. After about an hour of getting up they were very swollen, this is a side effect of it. Now on Ramipril

youalright · 06/10/2025 17:23

That's to high you need to go to a&e

michealsmum1998 · 12/10/2025 13:41

Sorry everyone for some reason I didn't get any notifications anyone had responded. I started the tablets on Monday just gone and it is now sitting closer to 160/100 so still high. I am going back to doctors tomorrow if I can get an appointment as the blood tests had some abnormalities

There much better numbers obviously not great but your not going to suddenly drop dead. Fingers crossed you manage to get an appointment tomorrow

michealsmum1998 · 14/11/2025 19:48

Thought I would do a quick update just had a 24 hour monitor on and the few I looked at were around 120/80 so much better after just a month on tablets.
