Is it normal for a period to start 4 months postpartum?

I am 4 months postpartum with twin boys and they're feeding every 2 hours on average. One baby is breastfed while the other is bottle fed expressed milk (he's having a breastfeeding strike right now.)
This morning my period started! I can't believe it. I thought I'd have much longer without it due to how often I'm breastfeeding and pumping milk but apparently not.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal or is this considered early?

Unfortunately yes, it’s normal! Very annoying though.

Sounds about right. Mine was around then, bfing one child.

Yes defo, I got mine within a month and was breastfeeding. Thought I was bleeding to death and went to the doctor 😂I guess that’s how some people get caught out and end up having 2 in the space of a year. Also I was breastfeeding and I think it’s always been when the baby has been sleeping a bit longer it’s happened. Like a couple of hours at a time, not a full night or anything . I’m sure the midwife told me breastfeeding would stop me getting pregnant. Hope it’s not too bad.

Mine started a month to the day after my ds was born and I was EBF!

Afternoonteaandicecream · 05/10/2025 16:16

3 months after DD born - EBF - I was hoping it would be longer too.

Mine came back four months postpartum and I was still breastfeeding DS1. If I remember correctly, we'd dropped a night feed as he was sleeping a bit longer, and that was enough to trigger ovulation.

Allswellthatendswelll · 05/10/2025 16:20

DS 5 months
DD 4 months (she slept better)

Both EBF! I wondered if it was because I'm quite er- well nourished?

I’m sure the midwife told me breastfeeding would stop me getting pregnant.

i really hope she didn’t!! I got mine back at 3 and 5 months pp. was breastfeeding my oldest till just after my youngest was born and still going at nearly 2. Regular as clockwork

snemrose · 05/10/2025 16:35

Yep, not unusual. I breast fed 2 dc exclusively for 6 months (and continued till they were 2 1/2 - not twins!) and both times my period returned within 5 weeks of giving birth 🙁

snemrose · 05/10/2025 16:36

Luckily I had a mw and a HV who debunked the myth that you can’t get pregnant whilst breastfeeding and advised me to sort contraception pretty damn quickly

Btowngirl · 09/10/2025 13:22

This is enlightening, mine came back 6m pp when EBF and I thought that was early 🤣

Peonies12 · 09/10/2025 14:16

Annoying but normal. I think it's very random, some mums will get it really soon even if BF loads, some won't get it for ages even if not BF !

wildagape · 31/10/2025 10:23

I'm so glad I'm not alone in this! I was so pissed when my period came back 🤣
I thought I'd get at least 9 months without it
