Bleeding and spotting on Mirena

Hello,

I had a mirena coil fitted four weeks ago. I was expecting there to be some irregular bleeding and spotting, but since it’s been fitted, I have spotted or bled every day since. Had it inserted and had some spotting, as expected, then was due my period, which was more painful than usual. Spotted after that finished and now having another period!

I don’t count this experience as an irregular bleeding pattern- it’s regular periods with constant spotting! I’m prepared to persevere for a few months, as I’ve had no other side effects so if it does gradually reduce heavy periods, then that would be great. But it’s beginning to bother me that it’s worse than before I had it put in! Can anyone who had a similar experience share if it got better, if it didn’t, and how long this constant spotting/bleeding lasted? Thanks.

Mine lasted until I finally, after repeatedly begging, had it removed 11 months after insertion.
They (nurses) kept telling me ‘give it 3 months…..it might just take a bit longer….it takes 6 months for some women…..try another 6 weeks’.
Awful experience. It also made me put on 2 stone in that time and triggered horrendous anxiety!

I’m sorry that was your experience; thank you for sharing.

Mine also did it for nearly a year! They kept telling me it would settle down and it only got worse. I did have fibroids though but it was meant to reduce the heavy bleeding not make it worse! Literally the worst year of my life.

That’s awful! 😞

Mine did for a year but then it virtually stopped and I’m glad I persisted. Mine was constant but. It as bad as my worst periods.

My SD had one fitted and she has been complaining about constant bleeding. She had heavy painful periods and they’re lighter but almost constant. It’s been about 6 months. She even had the mini pill prescribed on top to stop the bleeding which didn’t help. So not sure whether she should change contraception or persevere a bit longer so he interesting so hear from other people. Personally my periods became incredibly light & have now stopped but then I’m in my 40’s not 18.

I bled almost continuously for 2 months, with 3 days where I didn’t. It wasn’t a heavy period but definitely needed proper sanpro to cope with it

That plus a range of other awful side effects made me get it removed

I think mine was about 4 or 5 months to settle down then really nothing until it needed replacing and absolutely zero issues when it was replaced.

Get very random odd day of spotting but can be months apart. I would persevere a bit longer.

Give it time, it takes around 6-9 months maximum to settle but for most people will do it around 3/4. It's just your uterus getting used to it etc and it's trying to kick into gear thinning your uterus lining.

I would ask your GP for tranexamic acid or northisterone to take start taking it before your period and during any intermittent bleeding. Just ask to have it for the next 2/3 months whilist the mirena settles, it will also help it get into gear but make sure you don't have lots of bothersome bleeding as you wait.

Thanks for your contributions. I’ll give it a few more months, and hopefully it will settle.

Get a scan if you don’t feel right. Mine was embedded in my uterus in two places and working its way out. I have a friend who had hers surgically removed from her bowel. The nurse checked my strings and told me it was fine.

@cheeseforever I’m sorry to hear about yours and your friend’s experience. I assumed that it was a rare complication that it can migrate. I had it checked by a nurse but haven’t had a scan. Still bleeding unfortunately and getting a bit fed up.

Hello, just posted pretty much an identical thread to this! Had mine 7 weeks. Wondering if your bleeding sorted itself out? Non stop for me so far

Livpool · 01/03/2026 18:25

Mine took about 7 months to settle down - I was beginning to think about getting it removed
