Reoccuring UTIs

Tis a long story of UTis, antibiotics and thrush...

10 years or so ago I was stuck in traffic for 5 hours and this lead my first UTI and it continued for 3 months. I like a lot of women get thrush from antibiotics and I had a cycle of UTIs and thrush for this time. This also lead to nerve issues and 5 years of taking 20mg amitripltylene. I had few Utis during this time but the odd bought of thrush for usual reasons. I came off of the Amtrip as I hadn't had any issues or flareups for over 2 years and everything was great for another 2 years after that.

Now I am again getting frequent UTIs. The first one being June 25 and cycled for 3 months. Multiple treatments for thrush and now fluconazole doesn't seem to work for me so pessarys tend to be the go to.

I am now in a new UTi cycle but this has been something else. The worst pain I had felt in my entire life. Like my whole downstairs has been dipped in lava. I dont get stinging/burning during peeing but afterwards it is unbearable to the point that I was given morphine just to ease it. I have finally gone to a urologist and they have advised that I may not be having UTis at all and it may be painful bladder syndrome.

I am on my third treatment for thrush and 5 days after that last pessary I am still spotting from internal irriation from the pessary. I just want it to go. I always explain my pain like having a cactus permanently sitting in my vagina and then the flareups are like a new burn.

Does anyone have any tips for firstly keeping thrush at bay after antibiotics or getting rid of it all now.

Keeping utis away

Painful bladder syndrome.

I am trying to conceive and im nearly 40, I dont ovulate naturally and now I feel so crap all the time or in pain I can't even practice for fun.

I take it womens health probiotics daily, normal probiotics, i dont drink alcohol or caffeine and am very hygienic but no not to use soap or scents and no douching. I have D-mannose on order on advice from my urologist... please help

All advice welcome.
Yours
Hot and Irritated

Hi @ForeverUncomfortable . I'm so sorry you're having these problems - sounds horrible and I sympathise.

I wonder if you have looked into vaginal estrogen? As you are 40 ish that might help.

Also, I'm adding a link to my personal story. I thought I had a chronic UTI but I actually had a condition called aerobic vaginitis which is a bacterial imbalance in the vagina. However to me it felt like a UTI. If you scroll down to my later posts you'll find a DIY test you can do. I'm not saying it is this necessarily but might be worth considering.

Was just coming on to suggest vaginal estrogen. A friend had similar symptoms to you for many month and eventually was referred for kidney stone investigation. The VE was suggested and it’s been life transforming for her, she was beginning to not want to leave her house at 58!

Yep vaginal oestrogen. You don’t need to be peri or anything to need it.

I've commented a few times on these uti threads. I had them every month back to back for 2 years and most of the time the cultures came back negative. I had scans and a camera in my bladder and everything looked normal. I went on hipprex which helped for a few months but then stopped working. I tried D mannose. I started probiotics and it immediately solved them. I've not had a uti for almost a year now. I use free soul intimate flora but I've tried a few for vaginal/bladder flora and they've all worked the same.

Thankyou all for the comments and advice, I have just started on D-Mannose and I already take optibak famine probiotics so hopefully that will help to. Going to try switching to a mooncup to as tampons dont seem to be helping the situation either but im not sold on them yet. My ultrasounds of bladder and kidneys all came back fine and I think the thrush has finally cleared after over 2 weeks just a slight irritation now and no more spotting from that at least. Now im heading back into my period again. Oh the sweet joys of being a woman. Although I would take period pain over the burning bush anyway of the week. Although VE sounds like an option im not keen on using anything with hormones. Im nearly 40 and am TTC and I already dont ovulate naturally so we are fighting a face against time with faulty equipment and now my bladder has started throwing a tantrum to. Wish me luck. Coping to get on Chlomid in December.
