Positive coil insertion stories?

I’m due to get a coil fitted in an hour and I’m freaking out. I had one about 10 years ago, before kids, and remember screaming in pain and telling them to stop. It was worse than both my c sections!

I need one fitted for other reasons and I’m petrified. Please somebody tell me it’s not going to be that bad :(

After kids it’s totally fine, complete non event, don’t worry

Messingwithmyheadagain · 06/09/2025 10:35

Can you take some pain relief now in preparation for your appt?

Peachee · 06/09/2025 10:35

Similar to a smear in all honesty, didn’t hurt - just a dull period pain when it was inserted but totally bearable and I haven’t got a very high pain threshold (I don’t cope with injections and blood tests).

Chazbots · 06/09/2025 10:38

No kids here, still totally fine.

I was in and out in 9 mins, including a pregnancy test (as my GP had left me go too long in covid, so they wanted to be sure) last time.

Just about to have my 4th and wondering if this will be worse as it's at the GPs and I was advised to have it done by experienced people as no kids. It's a quick procedure.

If it's your 1st one, it can be a bit grim with spotting until it settles down. Life changing for me after, wish I'd had one years earlier as I had terrible periods.

Was told it's different for everyone, so ymmv.

DefinitelyNotDainty · 06/09/2025 10:46

No big deal here - I’ve had it done twice and it was fine both times.

Mauvehoodie · 06/09/2025 10:48

Take ibuprofen and paracetamol (and codeine if you have it) now! You can take all of those at the same time (I did for my miscarriages on advise of midwives). I had a good coil fitting, obviously not pleasant but not really painful. Good luck - everything 🤞🤞 for you .

eta I know it’s hard but try and take deep breaths and relax especially your jaw is meant to help, try not to be tense (I know how crazy that sounds when you’re really anxious!).

Ok thank you everyone!! I feel a little better. I have taken my pain relief and on the way. Ahhh!

Have had two. No issues at all either with having it put in or having it in. And also no periods to worry about, and I think it’s holding peri at bay. Best thing ever!

Chazbots · 06/09/2025 10:51

Yep, my next one is for HRT, not contraception. So it does help with peri...

Hope all is well.

twilightcafe · 06/09/2025 10:51

Mine was absolutely fine - no pain*. I had to ask the GP if she was finished.

*I did take three paracetamol and three ibuprofen capsules an hour beforehand after eating a light breakfast.

Make sure you ask for licodaine injection into your cervix, numbing gel or spray and anything else they have. Ask to have it all. Hopefully it's all good as you've taken some stuff before as well.

nervousmum26 · 06/09/2025 13:28

It wasn’t the best of experiences, ended up having 3 lidocaine injections as they just couldn’t get it in, it was quite painful and feel very crampy. Consultant was lovely though and it’s done now thank goodness. Thanks all.

Chazbots · 06/09/2025 13:38

It might be crampy for a while. But it should settle down and then (for me) was then no issue at all. Life was calmer and much, much easier. Probably saved me a fortune too.

Ymmv but good luck!

@Chazbotsthat’s great to hear. I have horrendous periods so hopefully it can improve my quality of life. And save me lots of money on sanitary products!!
