Smear results

Sux2buthen · 05/08/2025 17:01

Had a smear two weeks ago and called for results. They said they can see the results on the screen but I need to book an appt tomorrow.
Im guessing there’s HPV showing for any chat to be necessary. I’m just wondering if they speak to someone after a smear just to discuss HPV? I wish the reception people were able to have given any insight but I guess they can’t.
Obviously I’m mentally catastrophising so I’m trying to find out actual details of the best possible reason to need an appointment.

I've never phoned for results, they've always come in the post...which reminds me I need to book one.

Ok 👍🏻

Try to stay calm, appreciate that it’s easier said than actually done. Maybe the sample collected wasn’t sufficient and they want you to repeat the smear.

It is worrying but getting the discussion over quicker will prevent your mind wondering?

I would have thought that if it needed to be discussed straight away the GP would have called you? At our surgery the registered GP literally just reviews test results and calls if required otherwise we have to arrange be appointment.

Hoping that it’s not anything to be concerned about 💐

I had a letter with results, then had to go to gynae for a more in-depth examination - all clear, and I'm meant to be on annual recall, which I need to check, because it must be about now.

Sux2buthen · 05/08/2025 21:03

Thankyou. Logically I’m thinking the doctor would have made contact if there was a problem. When I called the receptionist said ‘yes I can see the doctors looked at it. The letters go here and the hospital, you need to ring the hospital’. This made no sense but I called the hospital and they said no, call your GP. So I tried again and a different receptionist said I need an appointment.
I just wish they’d they’d said ‘yes you need to repeat’ or ‘come back in 5 years’.
Not forgetting the lottery of actually getting the appointment tomorrow! I’m sure it’s nothing but I’ve just never had this before so I was surprised

Oh the merry go round of admin / receptionists. Yes I think the GP should have called you if it was urgent and needed to be reviewed again.

Maybe the system has changed in your trust?

Fingers crossed you’ll get an appointment tomorrow to discuss and you get some answers and your mind is at ease.

Sux2buthen · 05/08/2025 21:24

Exactly, so my logical brain says not to worry. As a lone parent to three though, I do sometimes panic so it helps to hear some sense!

I submitted an appointment request at the GP and they sent a message back saying I must keep my gynaecology appointment that is coming up.
This appointment is news to me I haven’t had a letter yet

I’ve never had this before and I’ve had a few smears in my time 🙁

High grade severe dyskaryosis.
Having a coposcopy appointment arranged apparently.
Apparentky most people get a good result?
I did cry

Are you in England? I can usually see letters on the NHS app days before any paper arrives in the post (this is as likely to be the fault of the Royal Mail as much as the NHS, or the combined system.)

Although it seems I missed a couple of notifications in the app earlier in the year, because it doesn't show notifications- I just went into the app to see if I could see when my last smear/gynae appointments were (September/November.) Though it was just my surgery asking for a BP reading for on-going monitoring of chronic conditions, and I suspect if they felt it were really urgent, I'd have had texts, letters, emails and phonecards- or at least one other method besides the app.

Sux2buthen · 06/08/2025 10:41

The letter arrived this morning so I’ve an idea what’s going on at least.
I scoured the medical apps, my surgery are not the best so no up to date info on there at all re appointments and things.
Im just reading up on things now. I know dr Google can be bad but I’m sticking to facts because I prefer to be informed

Got the colposcopy next Friday. Anxiety has gone up so I’ve ordered myself some yarn to crochet the hell out of to distract myself. Was worried earlier, then perked up then the appt came through so fast I’m back to worried.
I know logically it’s a good thing but it’s still stressful

Wishing you all the best for your appointment next Friday. Hope the outcome is positive..

Try to remain distracted (appreciate this will be tough).

Do you have a family member or close friend who you can reach out to for support?

💐

Sux2buthen · 06/08/2025 18:16

@Helpmefindmysoulmy boyfriend/ partner lives around the corner, he’s lovely and supportive but obviously a little clueless about the inner workings 😅. I’m on holiday straight after the appt, guess I can’t go in the pool but didn’t think it wise to delay just best to get it done probably?
I’m quite up and down today, plus getting a tooth pulled tomorrow.
Im probably being a wimp, I don’t know

OP posts:
Helpmefindmysoul · 06/08/2025 20:52

Of course that’s understandable and I think sometimes men feel quite helpless on how to support / maybe not say the right thing at the moment in time. I’m sure he will support you the best way he can.
Do you have a female family member or friend who could come with you or you could just speak with?
Ah at least you can try and take your mind off it whilst away.
Definitely best to get it done. The sooner you know the better for any action to be taken?
Ouch tooth related matters are the worst! Hope it goes okay..

It’s not being a wimp you’re entitled to your feelings and it’s a lot to take in, in a short amount of time. Be easy on yourself.

Sux2buthen · 06/08/2025 21:11

FlowersThankyou. They’ve asked that no one comes with me so I’ll be alone but it’s ok. I’ve read up what I can so I know what things mean but I’ll be asking a ton of questions too.
Thankyou for taking the time to reply

Just wanted to check in and see how you were and how it’s all going xx💐

Sux2buthen · 21/09/2025 09:20

Oh bless you, Thankyou so much.
Well I was petrified but they were lovely. They opted to do the LLETZ treatment before I’d even gone in so I was doubly anxious but at least I didn’t have time to fret. It did come back with what they thought but I’m to go back in six months to check it’s all sorted.
To anyone worrying I would say it’s well worth getting checked, the experience isn’t fun but it’s quite quick and despite what I’d read the recovery time (4 weeks) wasn’t painful for me and the bleeding wasn’t noteworthy. Although my experience isn’t the same as everyone’s, I know.
Thanks for asking 😊
