Does anyone else get breathless and completely wiped out a day before their period?

Hi all,
I’ve noticed that the day before my period starts, I feel really breathless, fatigued, and totally drained—like I can barely function. It’s not every month, but when it happens, it really knocks me out.

Is this a common PMS thing, or could it be something like hormone-related? Would love to hear if anyone else experiences this and if you’ve found anything that helps.

FYI - Iron is totally fine, recently checked. But I have always had low blood pressure.

Thanks!

Yup I get this

BadActingParsley · 02/08/2025 07:09

Yes there’s a thing called period flu, I would get it, and still sometimes in menopause when there’s something hormonal still happening….

id factor it in and know I’d be unlikely to be up for anything strenuous or would need an early night.

Yes i get this

Yes. I even get a fever, body aches. It's ridiculous.

What's more ridiculous is if I voice it then my dh will chime in and say he is also feeling under the weather. He's such a symptom stealer! I have to point out he doesn't have ovaries.

I had a hysterectomy a few year ago.

But before that my periods were all over the place due to severe adenomyosis but the one thing that always made me know my period was coming was the overwhelming tiredness and breathlessness the day before.

Sounds like anaemia, might be worth getting your bloods checked at the right time of the month.

mintsugardress · 02/08/2025 07:23

Yes I get this, not every month though (thankfully!) Maybe every other month on average.

So annoying when they do that! 🤣🙄

This sounds like anaemia, you should get your bloods checked.

Just found this after goggling why my arms ache during my period. I feel awful, really achey and weak, apparently there is such a thing as period flu! Who knew.

LavenderBlue19 · 02/08/2025 19:23

Not breathless but definitely exhausted and achy, and often hot/cold like I'm coming down with a fever (but the thermometer shows as normal).

Skybluepinky · 02/08/2025 19:28

Go visit your GP to rule out under lying health conditions.

WibbleyPie · 02/08/2025 19:31

Yes I do sometimes, I've also had iron levels checked as it's a symptom and they were also fine like yours.

I do wonder if I had them checked at the point I'm breathless then they would be lower, but I've got no way of knowing a) when I'm going to get a period with enough advance notice to book bloods (peri menopause irregular periods now) and b) it doesn't happen every period.

If it happens I know I'm in for a rough ride for the next couple of days before it arrives and the period itself.

I don't have any answers unfortunately apart from trying to not do stuff that makes it worse, gentle exercise and rest.

CassandraWebb · 02/08/2025 19:33

I am like this, just before and during. It's caused by my Myasthenia. The hormone change makes it flare up each month. It's a horrible feeling.

CassandraWebb · 02/08/2025 19:34

So in essence, I agree with @Skybluepinky that you should chat to your GP. A lot of autoimmune conditions (for instance) flare just before /during menstruation
