Mini pill and periods/spotting - Perimenopause

Hello everybody,

Seeking some information from those of you who have been put on the mini pill to control prolonged bleeding in perimenopause.

My periods started going nuts since last summer - missed a couple then had a few very long bleeds (30+ days). Saw a gynaecologist, had a transvaginal ultrasound. Everything looked ok but lining was thicker than normal. Doctor saw evidence of perimenopause (ovaries small and little follicle activity noted). I'm 45 and he predicted I will be fully menopausal in around 2 yrs. He suggested mirena or mini pill. I started the mini pill and I've been on it 4.5 months. Things have definitely improved and my last two periods were 5-8 days long but I had v light spotting before and after.

I went back to the doc after 3 months of taking the mini pill. He said it's going in the right direction so give it another 2-3 cycles.

Wondering what everybody's experiences has been with this mini pill. Grateful for any responses.

I'm on the mini-pill, for contraception rather than peri but I am peri too. I don't have any periods at all, haven't had one in about 3 years but I think irregular bleeding and spotting is a thing on the mini pill. You may find after a couple more months that you're periods become non-existent.

I stated taking it for spotting on the week before my period . It’s taken a very long time to settle . Think I’ve been on it a year now but still get 1 monthly bleed though it nothing like a normal period used to be . It’s a shame as when I took it years ago I was only getting 1 bleed every 3 months .

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm glad to hear your periods stopped. Must feel like bliss! Out of curiosity did your periods stop immediately when you started or was there done breakthrough bleeding at some point?

Thanks for your reply and I'm so glad to hear that things did settle for you. Are you periods now shorter and/or light? Hopefully things improve even more as time goes on for you!

Hi

I'm also peri and my dr put me on the mini pill to ease my heavy periods. First cycle my period was better and ended up after 5 days as usual. 3-4 weeks after, I started spotting and then bleeding, not heavy, just like a normal period but this has been going on for 2 weeks now and I'm so fed up. I'm due to go on holidays next week and I'm worried that I'll still be bleeding then 😫

Apparently mini pill can make things go crazy on the bleeding front initially. How many weeks have you been on it now?

Does depend on the mini pill. You have to give it time

years and years ago I tried one and bled constantly for 6 months.

i was them reluctantly put on Cerelle. After 6 weeks constant bleeding I’ve now not bled at all for 10 years plus (early 50's)

I'm also in peri and 8 months in with the minipill and still getting periods but they do seem to be generally getting a little lighter. I'm sticking with it as it does seem to have improved the emotional swings I was suffering.

I'm glad the periods are lighter for you. Are they normal length or prolonged? I am still bleeding for weeks each time. Sigh

Mostly shorter and lighter but I did have one which was very heavy and longer. Hoping things carry on improving!

Not for peri, but for likely endo and terrible PMT. Been on it since 2008 after a couple of years on combined pills, and my periods stopped immediately. Since I have been on it I bled maybe five times, very lightly. I do feel that hormones are doing “something” as I go through periods with very sore breasts which then settle again. I’m 40 now and intend to stay on it until they won’t allow me anymore, though I guess I’ll see what happens when I become peri or reach menopause. I think generally it’s the luck of the draw with the mini pill and how it affects periods.
