I went to specialist with a prolapse bladder.
After examination she found l had a prolapse bowel also.
( l have IBS/ diverticulitis). She wants to address my bowel first and handed me over to the specialist there. I've to have an Xray bowel enema.
Anyone had this procedure?
What can l expect?
I've had colonoscopies before / plus normal suppository enemas.
Thankyou.

Yes, I have. Its one of the easiest to have- the liquid you drink is chalky & smooth, tastes OK, then it's a simple xray. They might palpate your belly while doing so.

You’re thinking of a barium meal. A barium enema goes from the bottom end up.

That's a meal or a swallow.
This is an enema up the bottom. Where you then sit in an x ray seat and onto a special x ray toilet while you poo.. they then look at how your bowels / spincture etc work.
Not at all the same.

I've had this, it's called a Proctogram and in my case they were checking for a rectocele.( bowel prolapse.)
l did have the barium swallow first to outline the intestine and then suppositories which you administer yourself to clear the bowel.
As a pp said you then go into the xray room where you have a some paste like stuff put into your rectum. You hop onto a loo where they watch you poo out the paste on the video screen. In my case to look for the rectocele and how it impacted on bowel movements. I found it to be painless and straightforward and it was fascinating watching the bowel in action on the screen. Nothing to worry about, honestly, as everyone was very kind and professional

Thankyou so much.
Sound like exactly what I'm having for same condition.
You have been most helpful.

@ItsFridayIminLoveJS You are welcome, you should have an appointment a little while after the procedure to discuss ways of managing the rectocele. Good luck and hope it gives you some clarity as it's such a frustrating condition.

A proctogram (as the previous poster has explained) is different to a proper barium enema.

With a proctogram, you will be behind a privacy screen. They will Xray you when defecate. It will be done with minimal healthcare professionals to maintain your dignity.
