Ovarian cyst pain in hip

Pelvicpaininthebum · 25/06/2025 09:54

I've been found to have a 7cm ovarian cyst (probable endometrioma) on my right ovary (plus a 3.5cm one of my left).

I've been having low level intermittent right hip pain since April but in the last couple of weeks it's getting worse and worse. It's coming and going, generally comes on around 3x per day and wakes me at night. Was going with ibuprofen but now isn't.

I'm on the urgent list for a laparoscopy to remove the cysts but it's going to be around a 2 month wait.

I'm now getting worried thinking what if the hip pain isn't caused by the cyst so won't get better after the laparoscopy.

Has anyone else had hip pain with ovarian cysts? It's sometimes on the side of my hip and sometimes on the back.

I didn’t specifically get hip pain with my cyst (10cm) but I had an awful bloated belly and pain in ovary area.
your pain could be as simple as you’re walking or moving differently because the pain or discomfort possibly

I think if it's getting to the point it's waking you in the night then it's the time to get yourself checked and make sure your ovary isn't twisted which can be dangerous. When I was waiting I was told of the pain got as bad as you describe them I was to go to A and E.

Thanks but it was this bad when I saw the consultant on Monday and that's why I've been put on the urgent list for the laparoscopy. My GP has now prescribed me gabapentin for the pain which I started yesterday.

So I just need to tough it out for a couple of months till surgery, or it will twist or rupture in the mean time and I'll end up in a&e and have emergency surgery 🙈

Just in case anyone looks this up later on - I had the cyst removed end of August (it was 10cm by then). The hip and back pain instantly resolved!

When I had gynae issues a few years ago, I was having awful hip pain - right on the hip tip. I spoke to an osteo about it, and he explained that the internal organs for a woman are held in a hammock, and the top of the hammock wraps around our hips - it made so much sense.

When my issues resolved, my hip and cocyxx pain also resolved.

Like PP have mentioned, if it becomes unbearable, you must check in with your doctor.

Good luck!
