UTI recommendation

Just a quick recommendation for something that has eradicated my chronic UTIs.
They started maybe 4 years ago and I was getting them every 12 weeks to begin with. I then started on Hiprex which reduced them to every 6 months for a while, but eventually they came back again with a vengeance and I was having recurrent UTIs every 2-3 weeks.
I was put on a 6 month course of antibiotics and didn't have any UTIs over this time, but as soon as I stopped taking them they came back every 2-3 weeks again.
I tried D mannose and cranberry tablets which did nothing to reduce them.
I saw a consultant who did an internal bladder scan and said everything looked fine and my next step would be bladder infusions.
When I went to see her she asked if I had tried probiotics, especially as my UTIs were caused by ecoli. She told me to do some research at home.
I started taking probiotics which contain strains which are good for bladder and vaginal health. I have now gone 6 months solidly without a single UTI.
I have tried a few different brands and not really found any difference between them but I did make sure they all had the correct strain of probiotic in them.
I just wanted to post in case this helps anyone else!

Lactobacillus is the strain that you need to look for but most probiotics for vaginal/bladder health will probably contain these strains.

I think this may be in live yoghurt.

Thank you for the tip. Very helpful. What probiotic do you use?

heyhobigtoeherewegoagain · 31/05/2025 07:10

Yes I think it is in Kefir too. I have used a few different brands but I'm currently taking free soul intimate flora. It's £10 for a months supply.

Thanks for this. I think everyone with chronic or recurring UTIs will appreciate any suggestions for treatment. It's like a huge complex jigsaw that we have to try to find a solution to through trial and error. Are you post- menopausal? For many women, vaginal estrogen cream also plays an important role.

I think you need to get the probiotics specifically for vaginal health as there are different strains of lactobacillus.

I think that vaginal health and bladder/ urethra health are so connected.

RampantIvy · 31/05/2025 08:14

I assume you have been checked out for diabetes?

heyhobigtoeherewegoagain · 31/05/2025 08:50

Yes been checked for diabetes.
Also there's a massive gut/mental health link and randomly my anxiety has been much better taking probiotics too!
