I am going through the menopause and had some irregular bleeding and some cramping pain so my appointment is next week.
The letter says to drink 2 litres of water one hour before.
It says an abdominal ultrasound and or transvaginal scan will be done taking 20 mins.
I panic at a smear test as I hate the speculum , always have , absolutely bricking it , don't know why.I have had two large babies 30 years ago 10.5 lbs each vaginally, so don't know why I am working myself up.
Would love to just have a gin beforehand but of course I never would.

There is no speculum. Basically it is like a dildo going up there. It doesn't hurt, they lube it up well. Then they will get the scan pictures they need and then remove it. There is no pain involved at all in my opinion.

I find it far easier than a smear test. As PP said, no speculum, just the wand thing

I’ve had 4 or 5 internal scans and they’ve been fine. Sometimes they offer the chance for you to put the probe in yourself so you could ask to do so if you think that would help. Much more comfortable than a speculum. Hope it goes well.

I much prefer an internal to an external scan. It’s so much more comfortable because they’re not pressing down on a full bladder.

It's not painful at all OP. Just a bit awkward. But they do their best to put you at ease. Much easier than a smear.

Thank you all .I feel reassured.
Is the wand up for 20 minutes and is it as massive as I think ?
I think I need to practice , husband agrees 🤭

If you need a full bladder then it will be an external scan first. Then if they need to do an internal one they will send you to the toilet and ask you to empty your bladder beforehand.

It's a thin probe they use for the internal one

I had a scan recently and I'd say it was more like 5-10mins. Not 20. And it was quite thin so not at all uncomfortable.

It's very long and it made me panic a bit but actually was totally fine.

It's a lot smaller than a penis, made me laugh, they put a thing like a condom on it.. no speculum.
