Genital Herpes - preventative tips!

Hello! I imagine if you have found your way here, you are a fellow genital herpes sufferer πŸ‘‹πŸΌ … Welcome to Hell πŸ™ƒ - just jokes! It’s not SO bad.

my background - I have suffered since I was 18 (now 33).. I have been on a preventative acyclovir for YEARS.. however I do still get flare ups. I have figured a few tips and tricks in helping to prevent which I wanted to share with you all.. but I also wanted to CREATE this thread so that fellow sufferers can join and give any hints they can share that have worked for them!

My tips:

  • I get worse flare ups on my period, and I think it’s due to the pads. I started to buy an organic cotton (a little more expensive).. but I think they have helped. I also use tampons primarily and just use the organic cotton pantiliners.
  • I can’t wear a thong without getting a flare up on my bum (sorry tmi).. I have figured that it’s the rubbing/chafing of the underwear. Vaseline works a treat as a barrier of the underwear if you put it on before the thong.
  • obviously my preventative acyclovir does help.. you can ask a doctor if your flare ups are more than 6 in a year I think.
  • I was always told I couldn’t use a herpes cream, but as my flare ups are not INSIDE the vagina, usually on the pubic region or inside of bum, I have started to use cream when I feel a tingle and this seems to help.. Zovirax as an example.

i think that’s all for now. If I think of any others I will add them.

please share yours :)

thanks if you have got this far!

Herbalist here, this is some of the advice I give my own patients:

Supplements:
Vitamin B12 deficiency may trigger outbreaks
Vit C & Zinc reduce frequency of outbreaks
L-Lysine 500mg daily (tofu, legumes)
Antioxidants

Topical (reduce inflammation and irritation:
Melissa cream
Garlic in oil
Neem oil
Tea tree oil
Aloe vera
Witch-hazel anti-viral/ anti-inflammatory
St John’s Wort oil

clove essential oil- diluted and applied to sores

Sitz bath- epsom salts

Herbs taken internally as tinctures:

Yarrow, echinacea, liquorice, melissa, hypericum, Valerian, Jamaican dogwood, prunella vulgars (self-heal)

One double-blind study of 93 people with herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2, which can cause genital herpes, found that taking Siberian ginseng reduced the number of outbreaks. Outbreaks that did happen were less severe and did not last as long. Talk to your doctor about whether using Siberian ginseng to help prevent herpes outbreaks would help.

Acyclovir - antiviral medicine
(Enhanced effect + quercetin +flavonoids)
Enhanced by Japanese Geum, Chinese Sumac, Cloves

That's taken from my notes, let me know if you want to ask any questions about any of it. :)

Hi, thanks so much this is all very helpful.

so with my acyclovir, what do you recommend taking? I take a vitamin b12 everyday. I have not heard of some of the others, can I get these at a local chemist?

the oils you have mentioned, are they what you put on the sores when you have an actual outbreak?

thanks
