Diarrhoea after overian cyst surgery

Hi guys, I had surgery last Wednesday and I’m currently having really bad diarrhoea 😞 I’ve really struggled with the gas they use to inflate your stomach up (keyhole surgery) I’m really bloated and don’t much of an appetite. The diarrhoea is has been happening for the past 3 days now, it’s literally like water that’s coming out 🫣 is this normal after surgery?? I’ve never had surgery before I don’t know what to expect

I hope you get well soon op.
May i ask how did you find out you had an cyst.

CharlotteFlax · 24/04/2025 21:49

I don’t know if it’s normal but I’d ask your GP in the first instance unless you’ve been given discharge information with a phone number to call. If so, ring and ask.

If you’re worried overnight ring 111 for advice (presuming you’re in the UK)

I hope you’re fully recovered very soon!

Peppermint tea! I thought it was a bit of an old wives tale but I was full of gas and discomfort after keyhole surgery and it was a godsend!

Kayannie123 · 24/04/2025 22:02

@Fabulousagain hi, I had a scan and it was seen there. Had it for around 6 years

@CharlotteFlax hi yeah I might give the gp a call if it doesn’t stop in the next few days!

Peppermint tea will help definitely,I was told to drink it after surgery.

Are you taking pain killers? Could be that that's upsetting your stomach or an un related bug.

LoafofSellotape · 24/04/2025 23:24

I would take some Dioralyte as you don't want to get dehydrated.

lifemakeover · 24/04/2025 23:26

Are you taking antibiotics? If so they could be causing it. Hope you feel better soon. I'd speak to the GP or hospital tomorrow before the weekend TBH.

almostbloody50 · 24/04/2025 23:28

Peppermint tea can cause that as well. Have you taken an immodium see if it helps?

almostbloody50 · 24/04/2025 23:31

Sorry meant to say the oil in peppermint tea can cause the diarrhoea.

Hope you feel better soon, I’d be eating porridge and ginger biscuits, I lived on this post surgery.

AllBellyandBoobs · 24/04/2025 23:31

I'd give the discharge number, or your GP surgery a call. I have had 2 surgeries to remove ovarian cysts and had a lot of gas related discomfort but no watery diarrhoea.

Is there oil in peppermint tea? I think it's just dried leaves, isn't it?

Yep but when you pop that in hot water it realises the oils which is the minty flavour, it just maybe if you don’t normally drink it and you’ve had a load your tummy maybe reacting to it.

It could be lots of things though so 100% check you don’t dehydrate.

Greybeardy · 25/04/2025 09:32

Definitely don't take immodium without proper advice. Best bet would be to speak to someone who has access to your medical history/op note/surgeons, and probably before the weekend if it's not settled down. (DOI fwiw..doctor).

I hope you feel better soon.

I use an Ayurvedic tea for this bloating.

1 tsp Cumin
1 tsp Corriander
1 tsp fennel
All whole seeds. Put in a cup boiling water or teapot. Let infuse for 5 mins- strain and drink.

I drink this after every meal to help digestion. I used it after surgery and it helped a lot with the bloating.
