Piriformis Syndrome

I’ve been diagnosed with piriformis syndrome after 8 weeks of sciatica symptoms. It’s horrendous! We’ve come away on holiday and the 5 hour drive drive to get here sitting down was very painful.

Has anyone had this and if you have recovered with no flare ups what did you do? My understanding is that I need to strengthen my glutes so the piriformis muscle calms down.

Not me, but my mother in law was diagnosed a month ago. she went to physio to have it treated, said the treatment was incredibly painful but it did pass after two sessions. Might be worth finding a physio who can help when you’re back

My physio exercises were mostly stretches, which did help. Once symptoms have improved, then you can work on building strength.

I have recently been diagnosed but still not sure it is that. Is your pain in your thigh or hip/bottom? Mine is thigh only and excruciating, exercise seemed to make it worse.

Recently diagnosed my by chiropractor, she gave me one stretch exercise to do and symptoms
are now gone - I have another appointment in a few weeks we’ll discuss ongoing care for it then.

I had it in the 1980s. The GP diagnosed it and prescribed a series of physiotherapy appointments. The physio expressed surprise that the GP had got the diagnosis right first time, apparently she'd often get patients sent to her with "piriformis syndrome" who turned out to have something else wrong with them.

I remember lying on my front with a red lamp warming and relaxing that side of my bum, followed by massage and stretches to loosen the cramped muscles. Don't remember how many times I saw the physio, but I do still remember the stretching exercises that I had to do twice a day for ages, so if I feel those muscles getting tight it reminds me to do the stretches again.

Cleared it up completely, and I've never had any problem with it since.

Good luck, hope you have an equally satisfactory recovery.

I suffer with this periodically and nothing seems to get rid of it completely. Started from when I did couch to 5k and all the core workouts and stretches to go with running.
