Mirena Coil

Hi all.

For context I’m 35 and have 3 kids, 2 coils in the past, now on my third one (cant take the pill family history of migraine/stroke). They’ve been great in the past, stopped my periods and didn’t have much mood changes.
Since the birth of my third child in 2023 around my period and ovulation my anxiety and panic has been through the roof, never had that before, I only have one good week a month- this was without being on any contraception for a year or so.

Since having the coil fitted 9 weeks ago it’s been non stop light bleeding and I’m still very anxious, that’s basically daily too. I don’t remember this happening with the previous 2 coils. I’m just wondering has anyone had the coil to help bleeding and improve mood and if so how long did it take to settle?

When I had my first coil fitted about 4 years ago, it took 6 months for the spotting to stop. But, to be fair, I had it fitted due to heavy periods and flooding.

Mine gave me such huge anxiety I had it removed within weeks! Doctor refuses to acknowledge link 🤷‍♀️

Yeah one reason I’ve had it again was my periods were that bad I got low iron, so really hoping it stops! I’ve read 6 months on Google so will give it chance x

I’ve read this too about it making it worse, will give it a couple more weeks but will defo be getting it taken out if nothing changes!

How are you feeling now?

I’ve had mine about 9 months for heavy periods and peri-menopause symptoms. Bleeding stopped after a couple of months but now I have the worst anxiety ever. I’ve always suffered with it but it feels like the symptoms are ramped up. Now thinking I need to take it out.

anyone else experienced this? So frustrating as don’t want to go back to heavy periods

Well the bleeding stopped for about 3 weeks, now it’s started again- like a light bleed. I’m hoping it just gradually gets shorter/lighter each month then stops.
Anxiety is still hit and miss, I can go days without it.. then other days I can wake up and it’s there straight away and lasts all day. I’ll give it till 6 months then maybe go to the doctors and see what they suggest.
How annoying for you, bet you dont know what to do for the best. I wonder if there’s anything else out there to help heavy periods as an alternative. Do you have the anxiety everyday?

I seem to get periods of time when it flares up and then goes back down but I’ve noticed recently a really low mood that won’t shift and anxiety that hasn’t gone over the past several days. I’ve been on edge all day when there’s nothing happening to make me feel this way 😢 I think it’s time to try an alternative method

I despise mine.

Had it fitted 6 months ago for intermittent heavy bleeding.

Actual bleeding has dwindled to almost gone but instead I get constant funky discharge, a weird smell, pain, bloating and bleeding for days after sex. Low mood and anxiety to the point of tears.

I'd take the heavy bleeding over this any day. At least I had some normal days in between the bleeds when I didn't have to constantly wear pads or tampons.

I have a scan in 2 weeks to check it's in the right position etc.

I asked to have it out at my 3 month review but was refused by male gynae saying I hadn't given it long enough.

Had to have it put in via hysteroscopy under GA due to 2 x failed attempts by GP (cervical stenosis) so am afraid to ask GP to remove it as the pain was horrendous. Plus haven't been able to get an appt with the only female GP at my surgery who seems to know anything or care about women's health for 3 months.

Fuck the mirena and the doctors who pressure us into having them.

Whippet79 · 08/05/2025 17:29

@AreolaGrande God that sounds shit, I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been going through it too. I had one put in many years ago and the pain was horrendous but when the same GP took it out I felt nothing (only relief!) so it may be okay coming out?

I can’t find any other reason for it, not normal that at 5.30pm doing usual cooking that my anxiety is on another level.

The docs are going to try and talk me out of it but something needs to happen and soon!
