Keep having to reschedule a smear…

Has anyone had to reschedule / cancel a smear numerous times (4 to be precise).

been trying to book this since December! First one, I was spotting, called up to ask if I should come in and the receptionist checked with the nurse and they asked to reschedule - I said fine but the next appt was exactly 4 weeks later. I did say to her it is likely AF will come and she sort of laughed and said that is possible but see how you go

LO and behold, AF so I had to reschedule again. For whatever annoying reason they can’t do smears and fit a coil in at the same time so I had two appts for those things. Had the coil fitted, come smear I was bleeding so rescheduled.

was bleeding non stop after that coil so had to reschedule again.

Got my next one on Tuesday and went to the loo today and I’m spotting again!!!

should I just go? I don’t want them to flag me for wasting NHS time!

Just go. Unless someone’s heavily bleeding we would do it anyway so just go.

I had to reschedule about a month ago because my period was late and went on forever. Supposed to go on Tuesday but fully expecting to be bleeding again… because I was booked in for a months time 🫠

Thanks!! 🙏🏻
I’ve read this can bring up inconclusive results / abnormal though? Is that a small risk?

@nc0007 worst case if it’s inconclusive they’ll recall you for a repeat in 3 months but honestly now it’s just HPV testing we get far less inadequate smears. Do make sure it’s been 3 months since the coil fitting though as you can’t have a smear within 3m of any cervical ‘intervention’!

Oh no. No one told me that! It’ll be about 2.5 is that just about ok??

Aah that’s more of an issue @nc0007 they may well refuse to do it and advise you wait 12 weeks (see info here https://www.newcastle-hospitals.nhs.uk/services/sexual-health/cervical-screening/) if they were aware you’d had a coil it’s stupid of them to book it in so soon and I’d say something when you do eventually get your smear as it can impact on the result as it disturbs the cervical cells. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

When I booked mine last week she said I can’t be bleeding but only gave me the option of one date/time so I took it. Now I’m on a heavy period praying it goes in time.

nc0007 · 06/04/2025 21:29

@4pmwinetimebebeh ah okay, I’ll just go and then have the chat. It is what it is, maybe they didn’t put two and two together. I didn’t make a point of it on the phone either so I can’t fault her

@BlondeMummyto1 fingers crossed for you! The info seems mixed online, some places say no bleeding at all and some say spotting is ok. When I rung my surgery with spotting they said best to reschedule 😔 I’m getting sick of my coil it’s making me bleed on and off constantly. I bought period pants just as regular underwear now!!
