Mirena coil is stuck!

WelcomeToMonkeyTown · 25/02/2025 20:06

I had an appointment today to have my old coil removed and a new one implanted.

The Dr struggled to get the old one out and eventually the strings just snapped off, leaving the coil inside me. He then tried to get it out with additional "tools" (if that's the right word!) but it was so painful he had to stop.

Now I'm booked in for a general anaesthetic so he can do this procedure to remove it without the pain concerns.

Has anyone ever experienced this? Should I be worried?

Mine was removed under GA when the strings went awol. Had no issues

When I had my smear the nurse couldn't find my coils strings (I've never been able to feel them!) I then got referred for as an and they found it was particularly embedded on one side. I then went back to GP and she tried to get it out with a string retrieval device but could so I then git referred to gynae that was about 10mo this ago I finally gave my gynea app in about 3 weeks! I'm hoping they get it out there and then? If anyone can give any insight I'd appreciate it!

Missed out the word ultrasound!

Better under GA to be removed. Mine was behind a pelvic floor collapse issue and I nearly fainted with the trauma afterwards. Nurse should have left it alone where it was lodged but I guess she got an award for every retrieved coil. 😱

I am still waiting for mine to be removed since November. It is a long wait.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not in the UK so I was at my gynaecologist for the initial attempt anyway and he's scheduled the op for next week.

Sounds like it's not that unusual. I panicked after googling as all the links seemed to be American medical lawyers saying you should sue the doc or the makers of the coil 🙈🙈

My strings had gone AWOL. An ultrasound showed it was in the right place. Gynae gave me a choice of attempt now with a local or wait for general, local anaesthetic was absolutely fine and I had a replacement at the same time. I am surprised you weren't offered a local but it will be completely fine with a quick GA.

My strings went awol and like a pp the nurse couldn't find them during a smear.
booked in for doctor to change but she couldnt do it so was referred to gynae. That was last January and i got the appt in december. Went to appt but she couldnt do it either with special tool. Booked in for hysteroscopy. Had an interior ultrasound the week before to make sure it was in right position.
i had mine done under local anaesthetic but on reflection i think i would have preferred general as i dont like smears/dentist etc when oeolle are in my personal space and examining me. Infind it very uncomfortable and embarrassing.
procedure itself was quite quick but had to wait around all afternoon in day surgery for my turn. They also didnt tell me i wasnt allowed to drive myself home so i had to wait for DH to find a left to the hospital (45 min away) as his car was in the garage and i had the other one!

I had a gynae appointment prior to getting the GA but they couldn't get it out either. After multiple people rummaging about i was glad I was offered an hysteroscopy under GA to finally get rid of it.
