Depression before period

Hello,

I’m trying to establish if my moods prior to coming on my period are relatively normal or whether I need to look into doing anything about them.

I always know I’m about to come on my period as I get an overwhelming feeling of impending doom which affects my sleep and I wake up feeling like something bad has happened. In addition, I also feel extremely overwhelmed with pretty much everything. From the housework to kids to everything. Everything feels too much and I get very agitated.

Does anyone else feel like this and know any tricks to calm it down?

Years ago I went on anti depressants but I came off them when I got pregnant again - however I now recognise these were the feelings I was having and know now that they are actually hormonal and it does pass after a few days. I’m 38 by the way if that’s relevant.

I’m exactly the same and I’m so done with it tbh. I feel my life being wasted on that week before my period

Sorry to hear that.

I’m so fed up of it too. You’re not alone.

I get this but extreme, with unaliving thoughts and feelings. It's PMDD. But what you describe is common. Crap though.

It's many years since I had periods but I can still remember the horrendous black depressions I used to get in the days just before they came on. Absolutely debilitating. Plus feeling physically bloated and uncomfortable.

Sorry to hear that. I’ve had some dark thoughts over the years too. Have you found anything to help?

Hi OP

I spent my life with this the pill did help a bit but now at 49 HRT has stopped that weird mood completely which makes me think it's caused by a dip in oestrogen potentially?

I think you should see a GP and see what bio identical hormones you could try?

My worry for you is that you'll get worse as you get older or be put on antidepressants when it's caused by a hormone imbalance.

I’ve started noticing the same symptoms as you in the last 12 months. (I’m 34)
I did a thriva blood test and it said I had normal hormones. Which is annoying as I was hoping it might give me an indication of something I could change.
