Mirena and bowel movements

Hello

I've had my mirena 2 months and I think it's affecting my digestive system. I still go once a day but sometimes it's looser and sometimes I find it's more on the constipated side. Still going once a day though and no other symptoms. Has anybody else experienced bowel differences following the mirena?

No I haven’t. I don’t really understand how the two would be linked?

@Pinkpillow7 I've had a few other weird side effects since insertion. Wondering if I'm progesterone intolerant as had it put in because I couldn't tolerate the mini pill. I've read that hormone imbalance upsets the stomach and I wondered if anyone else had experienced it 😊

@Lollyl88 I realise this is an old thread but I wondered how you got on - did things settle down eventually? I got the Mirena coil a couple of months ago and I'm constipated for the first time in my life 😬

Hi @BravoBuild. To be honest my journey with the mirena was a complicated one. In the end I had 9 months of constant bleeding and had it out.- it just didn't agree with me. I have since discovered I am progesterone sensitive so the mirena just didn't agree with me. The bowel issues were the least of the side effects to be honest and I'm a lot better off with it out! Hope it settles for you :)

I have had my Mirena for many years and I have also had constipation for years - I think the constipation pre-dates the Mirena but may have worsened it. I have recently started vaginal oestrogen and my constipation has gone away - it's only been a few weeks but so far it is amazing. Just putting that out there in case it is something anyone else wants to try.

Thanks @Lollyl88 My bleeding is just starting to reduce after 6 weeks so I'm hoping that will be the end of periods for me. Fingers crossed! Pleased you're feeling better without yours. If only there was a one-size-fits-all solution...

@OddBoots interesting to hear your symptoms have improved with oestrogen. I'll bear that in mind. I did read that progesterone causes a sluggish bowel so maybe oestrogen has the opposite effect. I'm hoping to try oestrogen once the coil has settled down. I do sometimes think that once I've been back and forwards to the GP/nurse/pharmacy, had blood tests etc and tried the combined pill/Mirena/oestrogen in its many forms, I'll be out the other side 😏
