Citalopram PMT

Does anyone take Citalopram for PMT?

I have horrific PMT and turn into a monster! I’ve been taking Citalopram 20mg for two years now. Whilst I’ve discovered it helped (now I’m weaning off!) I had low libido and wanted to try and come off it. I’ve been taking half for a week now and this has coincided with being due on.

Like I said, I didn’t realise it was working until I’ve weaned down and have felt awful. Emotional, snappy, intolerant and just generally horrible to be around. I’ve just take a 20mg tablet as I am so upset and my husband told me to try again slower this time.

Has anyone else been through this? Wondering if I’d rather have low libido than be like this!! Just hoped to treat myself naturally.

Hi OP,

I suffer terribly with PMT and take Fluoxetine, another SSRI, for it. I tend to just have it in the latter half of my cycle, which is something of a compromise.

I’m menopausal now, but had PMDD since my teens. I’ve taken Citalopram for about 10, the last 2 years I’ve taken it with HRT. For a few years before taking the HRT I couldn’t figure out if the Citalopram was working or not - was it working too well and keeping me subdued or was it not working and I felt down? I definitely felt the rage creeping back in when I tried to ween myself off it.

I think if I still had periods I would take Citalopram for the last 2 weeks.
